In life we go through many phases and afterwards we often gain tremendous insights into what drove us and how our expectations often stand in contrast to actuality. As we grow older we realize that many people often liked us for the entirely wrong reasons - and playing in a band will give you a nice taste of this. Is it cool we are playing here? Yes. Do you really admire my music? Not really, I'm here for the drinks. As @whatamidoing describes, human beings are constantly on the search for validation and there are certain types of appreciation that artists get where they can't quite know whether it was genuine or not. As always it's a great place to start with ourselves and to understand how fame and the opinion of other people have shaped our behavior and outlook on life.
