Marlene tenía más de cinco años viviendo en la capital de la ciudad. Había llegado de su pueblo a estudiar ingeniería, y pocas veces viajaba para allá para no descuidar los estudios. El estrés de escribir la tesis, en tiempo récord, hizo que aumentara de peso. Eso, en realidad, le importaba poco, ya que en la gran ciudad donde vivía nadie estaba pendiente de la vida de los demás. La gente decía: "Buenos días" sin esperar respuesta; y el "¿Cómo estás?" era una pregunta muda para gente sorda. # Los compromisos laborales habían sustituido a los académicos, Marlene solo estaba enfocada en trabajar. A veces ni se miraba en el espejo. Trabajaba con hombres y adoptó un poco al vestimenta de estos: jeanes, franelas blancas y cascos. # Un día una amiga le sugirió que se arreglara el cabello; y ella respondió: ¿Para qué si paso todo el día con cascos? # La amiga se dio cuenta de que ella era feliz así y la dejó tranquila. Pero, un día inesperado, Marlene recibió una llamada de su mejor amiga de infancia, quien le pedía el favor de viajar al pueblo, ya que necesitaba conversar algo urgente con ella. # Marlene había postergado este viaje pendiente, porque en el pueblo nadie perdona: un kilo demás, una cana sin pintar, un hijo postergado por decisión o un marido feo, jeje. # Con toda su vida planificada, y casi sin tener espacio para reuniones sociales, llamó a su amiga y le dijo que iría dentro de quince días. # Marlene se miró en el espejo con el ojo crítico de sus familiares y vecinos: Vio que se le hacía un rollo salvavidas donde terminaba la pretina del pantalón; y cuando se colocaba el sostén, la franela dejaba ver que le quedaba apretado. Se dijo así misma: "Tengo que rebajar".

Tomó cita con el nutricionista quien le dijo que tenía 25 kilos por encima de su peso ideal, y que en 15 días sería imposible bajarlos, pero que sí podría bajar cinco. Marlene pensó que con cinco kilos menos, poca gente le criticaría su sobrepeso. # La nutricionista le mandó a Marlene una dieta de "ensaladas", que esta cumplió al pie de la letra; y a los quince días había logrado bajar siete kilos, porque también comenzó a entrenar. # Marlene arregló todo lo del viaje, y tomó el autobús para su pueblo, cuando llegó la esperaba su hermano, quien después de abrazarla le dijo: # —Marlene, ¿qué te pasó? ¿Pareces una vaca? # Ella se rió, y le contestó: # —Sí, verdad. ¿Pero hay algún problema con eso? ¿Ya no me quieres por gorda? # El hermano contestó: # —Bueno, yo sí te quiero, pero creo que se te va a poner difícil la meta de conseguir marido. # Dijo esto y soltó una ruidosa carcajada. Marlene entendió que debía ir rápido a ver a su amiga para evitar que más gente hiriera su seguridad. # La reunión con su amiga fue breve. El asunto se trataba de la firma de unos documentos de una moto que ambas habían comprado cuando se hicieron mayores de edad, y que ahora su amiga quería pagarle a Marlene el monto que ella había cancelado para que la moto solo fuera de su propiedad, y así regalársela a su hijo. # Marlene estuvo de acuerdo, y le dijo que no tenía que pagarle nada, que ese era un regalo para su ahijado, y procedió a firmar los documentos. # La amiga de Marlene no le dijo nada sobre su gordura. Era la única persona que la conocía bien, y sabía que estaba herida por los comentarios de la gente del pueblo. # Marlene no se despidió de nadie, y enseguida se fue al terminal de pasajeros huyendo de las miradas de todo el mundo. # Cuando fue a comprar el boleto para regresar a la capital se le acercó el "fakir", y le preguntó: # —¿Por qué estás triste? # Ella le respondió: # —¿Y de dónde saca usted que estoy triste? # —Porque soy fakir y lo sé todo. Conozco el destino de las personas. Por ejemplo, sé que en este momento te sientes frustrada, porque la gente en el pueblo le prestó poca importancia a tus logros académicos y laborales; sino que se enfocaron en tu sobrepeso. # —¿Y usted, cómo sabe eso, si es primera vez que me ve? # —Ya te dije: tengo el poder de ver más allá de lo superfluo —respondió el fakir. # Y desde ese día, Marlene y el fakir se hicieron amigos. Ella continuó comiendo ensalada y entrenando. Cada día se siente más segura de sí. Sus compañeros de trabajo la enamoran, pero ella añora encontrar a un hombre como el fakir que sea capaz de adivinarle el pensamiento sin que ella hable. # El fakir, por su lado, está pendiente de Marlene a toda hora.
