When you have nothing to do on a ferry

Ferry trips can be something nice, and they often are. The wind is usually very pleasant in summer, and some of the ferries are also air-conditioned - so they are usually very pleasant in summer. If I think about journeys in winter, which I've fortunately never had, it's bound to be quite boring, as you can probably only stand it indoors. Since there are also quite a few cars on the ferry, it takes a while for them to start their journey - which means for me: killing time. How do I do that? Get the camera out! I have photographed seagulls hundreds of times, so I wanted to wait for the "right" moments and the "right" seagulls. So I practically set myself a little challenge. For example, the cover picture shows a brownish seagull, so I tried to photograph it together with another brownish object. I think - also thanks to Lightroom - Challenge completed. The second picture shows a rather greyish seagull, the ship in the background fits in, as the sun was slowly setting here, we had some orange tones, this shows in the feet and the beak - so that the grey stands out from the water, I exaggerated the water "a little" - but it's an art form :P

So what else is on a ferry? Lifeboats! Most are in round containers and inflatable, but here you see a real "lifeboat" I always wonder how many people are supposed to fit in it. It doesn't look really big - the way people behave in a panic, I can imagine that either too many people will squeeze onto it, or it will be loaded with too few people because it will be lowered into the water too early. I'm thinking of the film Titanic. I'm quite sure that many more people could have fitted into the lifeboats, but I think that was criticised by the press even at the time of the sinking? So the film seems to be accurate in that respect.

Next to our ferry was another one - the draught of such ferries is small, so you shouldn't necessarily take them out to the "open sea", but how do these huge ships hold then? The answer is: anchor. On the photo and also from a distance, the thing looks quite small. But it is actually almost as big as I am. It's actually quite impressive how distance can change our perception of things. I remember the first time I stood by the Eiffel Tower. From a distance I thought, "I imagined it to be taller." Turns out when I'm standing in front of it, it's even taller than I imagined.

Wenn man auf einer Fähre nichts zutun hat

Fähr fahrten können etwas schönes sein, sind sie oft auch. Der Wind ist im Sommer meist sehr angenehm, teilweise sind die Fähren auch klimatisiert - im Sommer also meist sehr angenehm. Denke ich jetzt an Fahrten im Winter, die ich zum Glück noch nie hatte, wirds bestimmt recht langweilig, da man es vermutlich nur drinnen aushält. Da auf der Fähre auch einiges an Autos mitfährt dauert es erstmal bis diese ihre Reise beginnt - heisst für mich: Zeit todschlagen. Wie mach ich das? Kamera raus! Möwen habe ich gefühlt hunderte Male fotografiert, also wollte ich auf die "richtigen" Momente warten und auf die "richtigen" Möwen. Habe mir also praktisch selber eine eigene kleine Challenge gestellt. Das Titelbild zeigt bspw. eine bräunliche Möwe, also habe ich versucht diese zusammen mit einem anderen bräunlichen Objekt zu fotografieren. Denke - auch dank Lightroom - Challenge completed. Das zweite Bild zeigt eine eher gräuliche Möwe, da passt das Schiff im Hintergrund zu, da hier auch langsam die Sonne unterging, hatten wir einiges an orangenen Tönen, dies zeigt sich in den Füßen und am Schnabel - damit sich das Grau vom Wasser abhebt, habe ich's beim Wasser "etwas" übertrieben - aber ist ja eine Kunstform :P

Was befindet sich also noch auf einer Fähre? Rettungsboote! Die meisten sind in runden Behältern und aufblasbar, hier sieht man aber ein richtiges "Rettungsboot" ich frage mich immer wie viele Leute darein passen sollen. Wirklich groß wirkt es nicht - so wie sich Menschen bei Panik verhalten kann ich mir auch durchaus vorstellen, dass sich entweder zu viele drauf quetschen werden, oder es durchaus mit zu wenig Leuten beladen wird, weil es zu früh ins Wasser gelassen wird. Ich denke dabei an den Film Titanic. Bin mir recht sicher, dass da noch viel mehr Leute in die Rettungsboote gepasst hätten, aber ich glaube das wurde sogar damals zum Untergang von der Presse kritisiert? Also scheint der Film in der Hinsicht schonmal akkurat zu sein.

Neben unserer Fähre lag noch eine weitere - der Tiefgang von solchen Fähren ist gering, deshalb sollte man mit diesen auch nicht zwangsweise aufs "offene Meer" aber wie halten diese riesen Schiffe dann? Antwort ist: Anker. Auf dem Foto und auch von der Ferne wirkt das Ding recht klein. Ist aber tatsächlich fast so groß wie ich. Eigentlich recht beeindruckend wie Entfernung unsere Wahrnehmung von Dingen verändern kann. Ich weiss noch als ich das erste Mal vom Eiffelturm stand. Von weitem dachte ich: "Den habe ich mir größer Vorgestellt." Turns out als ich da vorstehe, der ist noch größer als ich ihn mir vorgestellt habe.
