When Alice appears before the group the following day, she amazes them by claiming healing from the Virgin Mary. Because of this, there is a media frenzy that is amplified by reports of miracles occurring. An image of Mary in red tears stands in the chancel and weeps as the healings are taking place. With the assistance of Bishop Gyles, Monsignor Delgarde has been assigned by the Catholic Church to investigate the charges. Alice becomes friends with Gerry, and it is at this time, Gerry learns that Alice had made the error of believing Mary to be the Virgin Mary after having an encounter with a Mary-like entity. Gerry finds a partner in Fr. Hagan, Alice's uncle, who was treated by Alice but now disputes the healings after experiencing visions of Mary as a horrifying monster. Gerry and Fr. Hagan become friends after witnessing images of Mary as a hideous creature. He discovers a book about a witch named Mary Elnor who performed miracles for Satan. Still, Mary Elnor rapes him, and his body is found hanging in the church before he can report it to authorities. The disclosure of Hagan's apparent suicide, according to Bishop Gyles, would contaminate the miraculous events that have taken place.
