Violet, along with Finch's friend Charlie, is dismissed from school due to their involvement in the brawl. Mr. Embry, the guidance counselor at the school, suggests that Finch attend a support group session in a nearby town while they chat about their problems. Because of his chance encounter with Amanda Violet's buddy, the group learns about Amanda's bulimia and the fact that she has made two prior suicide attempts. Whenever Violet finishes school, she goes to her friend Finch's house. Finch's sister Kate, who has left the meeting to work, joins her in the chat once she returns. Finch approaches her at a tavern and asks her to tell him about their father, whom she has never met before. His promises haven't made her feel any less fearful of him. Violet will greet him when he arrives at Violet's home for the first time. She invites him to visit her in her room and speak with her.
