However, by adopting healthier lifestyle changes and following doctor's guidelines, we can play a big role in recovery, as well as help prevent future heart attacks. Interventional cardiologist Grant Reed, MD, says that a heart attack should be treated like a life-changing experience. And we need to take an active role in health, in order to help recover from a heart attack. According to the *American Heart Association* (AHA), 1 in 5 people who have a heart attack will usually be hospitalized for a second time within ± 5 years. However, with proper self-care and a focus on health, we can reduce the risk of relapse. ### Recovery Time.

Most people are able to return to work or resume activities between two weeks and three months after a heart attack. However, individual recovery time also depends on a number of factors, including: - How early a heart attack occurs and how to treat it. - Size and severity of heart attack. - Our health and habits before a heart attack occurs. - Lifestyle changes we make after a heart attack. said **Dr Reed**, "The most common reason for a heart attack is a sudden blockage of the heart arteries. And the effect of a heart attack generally depends on how much the blood vessel is blocked and for how long." Patients who are treated quickly and appropriately may have milder symptoms and fewer long-term consequences. Eating a healthy diet and exercising more can help us lose weight for a healthier heart. ### 5. Focus on mental health.

Doctor Cho said that people tend to underestimate the mental trauma caused by a heart attack. Though a heart attack can affect the mental condition of patients and their families. A study also shows that people who have heart disease are more likely to develop depression than those who don't. That is, it is very important to protect our mental health after a heart attack. So, don't ignore your mood swings and watch out for symptoms of depression like sadness, fatigue, and loss of interest or pleasure in activities. If you start to experience these feelings, call your healthcare provider or doctor to discuss them. ### 6. Manage stress.

Cardiac rehabilitation will also teach us that stress reduction techniques to try to improve mental and emotional health can reduce the chances of a future heart attack. ### 7. Quit smoking.
