F O O D

The mere thought of it heightens my anxiety.
I do not know if I am alone in this feeling, but every day, it looks like we are being caged into a box.

A tiny, little box.

There are rules. Many food rules.

🗨️“Do not eat GMO foods.”
🗨️“Reduce your rice intake, it spikes your blood sugar levels".
🗨️“AVOID SUGAR and seasoning cubes at all costs!”

Again and again, I can hear my mom's voice saying, "Those junks damage the brain and memory, particularly that part called the hippocampus! Eat healthily, Ukpono".

Rules, rules, rrrrules! Argh!

Actually, a part of me wants to eat everything nutritionists label as “bad”. Is it white bread? Red meat? Packs of noodles? Doughnut with soda? Or salt, even when battling with high blood pressure? But there is “Aproko Doctor” who pops up on my newsfeed every eke market, saying, "NOOOOOO!"

Guilts, guilts, prayers.

Doctors warn against consuming "empty calorie foods" — they are only a pack of calories; they offer little or no essential nutrients. So now, you count the calories in each food before popping anything into your mouth.

Take a look at this.

QuantityItemCalories (kcal)
1 cupegg white125
1 largeegg75 kcal
1 medium-sizedbanana105
1 ozmozzarella cheese78
Total383 kcal

Exhausting!

But here is the thing:

A little fruit here + A little veggies there = A healthy body.

There is a need to find a balance somehow. I understand that nutritionists and dietitians care for our wellbeing. This is why they raise awareness about the importance of nourishing the body with healthy foods.

For instance, a protein rich meal not only repairs tissues, but also supports neurotransmitters, which are essential for brain function, including our memory.

Omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fatty fish like salmon and walnuts, boost our cognitive (brain) function and memory.

Can you spot the wholesome foods?

Wholesome foods, as compared to processed foods, play a significant role in the brain's overall performance.

Even though the thought of food rules still makes me cautious, I actually do appreciate how a healthy choice of meals always nourishes our bodies and brains.

My progress in this week's memory game

Just like me I think I want to taste everything but boom you would see restrictions 🥺
I just tire

I understand that feeling.
It could come like that desire to try different cooking combos. You'd be willing to prepare afang with chicken.
But somewhere, there is this unwritten rule that both cannot go together. It is beef or goat meat and nothing else.
Maybe it's time to step of the box. Try new foods. Eat those large chicken lap and everything that will make Aproko Doctor frown. 😂

Exactly just like eating bread and okra 😋😀

Like bread with okra soup?
Have you tried this before?
Looks like something I should try this week.
