Have you ever wondered under what term we can qualify software that has ceased to be marketed, and which has been abandoned by its creators. Well the answer to that question is: “Abandonware”.

The Abandonware. ###### The term **Abandonware** was first used in 1997 by the creator of the Abandonware Ring website, **Peter Ringering**. The term Abandonware is preceded by certain premises, which were coined by Peter Ringering on his aforementioned website, and which are as follows:

El Abandonware. La primera vez que se utilizó el termino **Abandonware** fue en el año 1997 por el creador de la página Web Abandonware Ring, **Peter Ringering.**. El término Abandonware está precedido por ciertas premisas, las cuales fueron acuñadas por Peter Ringering en su ya mencionado portal web, y que son las siguientes:

a) The software in question must be at least 4 years old. ##### b) The copyright owners of the software must have stopped selling the software and must no longer be supporting it. c) If, after discontinuing the sale of a software, the company that owns the copyright to the software resumes support for its product, then the product can no longer be classified as "Abandonware". ####

Can Abandonware be considered a legal activity? The answer to the above question may be ambiguous, but according to the originator of the term Abandonware, Peter Ringering, forsoftware preservation purposes, it should not be considered an illegal activity. I explain the rationale behind Peter Ringering's above statement below: If we take for example the US copyright law, we can see that a natural person's copyright lasts up to 70 years after the death of the natural person, and for a company this copyright can last up to 90 years. So abandonware ensures that after this time, the software is not lost, but rather that it maintains an effective preservation due to its constant distribution. ####

¿El Abandonware puede ser considerado una actividad Legal? La Respuesta al cuestionamiento anterior puede ser ambigua, pero según el creador del término Abandonware, Peter Ringering, para fines de conservación del software, no debe considerarse una actividad ilegal. Explico el porqué del enunciado anterior de Peter Ringering, a continuación: Si tomamos por ejemplo la ley de derechos de autor de USA, podemos ver que los derechos de autor de autor de una persona natural, dura hasta 70 años después de morir la misma, y para una compañía estos derechos de autor pueden durar hasta los 90 años. Siempre debe considerarse que eventualmente, los derechos de autor de un software cesarán y pasaran al dominio público, luego de cumplirse los periodos de mantenimiento de la autoría de los derechos de autor sobre dicho software. Pero si hay algo que no desaparece, son los derechos morales del autor sobre su obra. Esta es la página web que suelo recomendar mas cuando se es novato en el Abandonware, debido a que, desde mi punto de vista, es la mas fácil de usar, o mejor dicho, es la que te permite comenzar a jugar tus abandonware de forma más rápida, debido a que cada juego que se encuentra en la plataforma, suele estar empaquetado con el emulador adecuado para operar el videojuego en cuestión. El funcionamiento de la página es muy similar al que Myabandonware.
