Über Zweifel – und darunter

„Ich weiß nicht.“ Wie bitte? Die allzeit schlagfertige und immer so beredte Vivienne gibt offen zu, etwas nicht zu wissen? Ich war erstaunt. Aber eigentlich war ich noch ein bisschen mehr – enttäuscht! Denn ich hatte gehofft, sie könne mir etwas Gescheites sagen zum Thema Zweifel. Darum hatte ich mir eine schlaue Frage an sie ausgedacht, nämlich: Was ist eigentlich der Kern des Zweifels? Und dann grätscht mir Vivienne einfach weg mit --- Halt, Moment mal. Ich Dummkopf! Natürlich! Vivienne hatte gar nicht für sich selbst geantwortet. Sie hatte für wen anders gesprochen, jemand sozusagen zitiert. Ich müsste also schreiben: „‚Ich weiß nicht’.“ Sie hatte einen imaginären Ur-Zweifler zu Wort kommen lassen, und der Kern des Zweifels ist, etwas nicht zu wissen, das war ihre Aussage! Oder? Ich war irgendwie doch noch immer oder vielleicht auch schon wieder neu im Zweifel. Ich begann sogar zu zweifeln, ob meine Frage nach dem Kern des Zweifels den Kern der Sache überhaupt treffen könnte. Ich zweifelte am Zweifel, an der Möglichkeit, mehr als ein diffuses Gefühl damit benennen zu können. Und zwar recht willkürlich, wie mir jetzt scheinen wollte. Oder? „Vivienne“, begann ich also erneut, „ist das denn nicht ein Widerspruch in sich? Wenn ich etwas nicht weiß und das auch klar aussprechen kann, dann bin ich doch nicht im Zweifel, sondern erlebe mich in der Unwissenheit. Das ist doch nicht dasselbe. Oder?“ „Worte oder Aussagen können gleich lauten, aber doch Verschiedenes meinen“, holte sie aus. „Nimm zum Beispiel die berühmt gewordene Wortfolge, mit der Noam Chomsky seinerzeit einen grammatisch zwar korrekten, aber inhaltlich widersprüchlichen, geradezu grotesken Satz demonstrieren wollte: ‚Farblose grüne Ideen schlafen wütend.‘“ Ich war gespannt, worauf sie hinaus wollte. „Da wir hierzulande mit der Partei der Grünen und ihren Ideen zu tun haben, ist ein Sprachspiel, in dem von ‚grünen Ideen‘ gehandelt werden kann, nicht mehr abwegig. Und Ideen Farblosigkeit metaphorisch für ihre Fadenscheinigkeit oder ihren Armut an Gehalt zuzusprechen, somit insgesamt von ‚farblosen grünen Ideen‘ zu reden, wird sinnvoll möglich. Für das wütende Schlafen fällt dir sicher selbst auch noch eine De-Metaphorisierung ein, sobald du erst einmal zugelassen hast, es könne eine bildliche Sprechweise sein.“ Ich schaute wohl doch noch ziemlich zweifelnd, denn Vivienne fuhr rasch fort: „Der Satz ‚Ich weiß nicht‘ ist überhaupt nicht auf einen ganz bestimmten Inhalt fixiert oder fixierbar. ‚Ich weiß nicht‘ signalisiert mehr Unlust als Unwissenheit, wenn diese Worte als Antwort auf die Frage ‚Gehen wir ins Kino?‘ erscheinen. Es ist dann Ausdruck einer Unschärfe der eigenen Laune, einer Unklarheit der eigenen Erwartungen. Und wenn du fragst, was der Kern des Zweifels sei, dann weiß ich nicht, ob diese Frage in irgendeiner Weise zielführend sein könnte. Wenn du hingegen behauptest, gestern sei die Sonne gar nicht aufgegangen, dann hege ich aufgrund meiner eigenen Erinnerungen an gestern doch starke Zweifel, ob ich dich richtig verstanden habe. So wie ich Zweifel hege, ob es tatsächlich möglich ist, einen Satz zu konstruieren, der grammatisch richtig und unter keinen Umständen sinnvoll sein kann.“ Mir begann es zu dämmern: Zweifel ist an sich zwar so ungreifbar wie Nebel und hat keinerlei Kern. Wenn ich aber wirklich zweifeln will, dann gelingt das nur systematisch, nicht als kleines Hie-und-da, sonst gerate ich selbst mit in den Nebel. René Descartes war ja seinerzeit gerade bei seinem Versuch, alles zu hinterfragen und alles zu bezweifeln, darauf gestoßen, dass er dann auch den Zweifel bezweifeln muss und nur das reine „Ich denke“ übrig bleiben kann, dieses inhaltslose Etwas, das kein Wissen ist und auch kein Zweifel. Das systematische Zweifeln ist ein Mittel zu einem anderen Zweck, eine Methode. Dahinter steht der Drang zur Wirklichkeit, zur Ent-Täuschung. Wer schon bei diffusen Gefühlen zu zweifeln meint und dabei in Wahrheit doch nur seinen Vorurteilen verhaftet bleibt, zweifelt nicht wirklich, sondern negiert bloß andere Meinungen. On doubts - and underneath

"I don't know." Excuse me? The always quick-witted and eloquent Vivienne openly admits she doesn't know something? I was astonished. But I was actually a bit more - disappointed! Because I had hoped she would be able to tell me something clever about doubt. So I came up with a clever question for her, namely: What is the essence of doubt?
