Many years ago, when I was still young, I worked in a hospital as a nurse. I had just graduated and had to fulfill a legal requirement to work 18 months in a distant hospital. I had to get out from under my father's yoke, and what better way than to serve in a hospital wherever he was. I spent two years of my life there, working in a five-story hospital. Luckily, I was with excellent professionals who, besides teaching me many tools to practice as a good nursing professional, made me even more passionate about continuing to study medicine. From this hospital, I went to work in another hospital. Now I was in my hometown, I had to return because my mother began to suffer from an illness that needed my presence. She had cancer, thank God, I was able to work again within two months of quitting my old job. My mother was already being channeled to start her oncology treatments, which she overcame despite medical expectations. She and her cancer were what is called a true miracle of healing. It was there that I was initiated into blind faith in the designs of our creator. I was working in this hospital in my city, and then, after 5 years, I applied to medical school at the prestigious Universidad de los Andes in my country. After a short 8 years of university, I returned to my city. My mother had another cancer. This one was more painful, and she was alive only one year after her diagnosis. As soon as I graduated from college, she was already in bed in the last months of her life. I could not go to work as a doctor because I felt sentimentally obliged to take care of her in her last days and not to be separated from her anymore, until the end. Two months after my arrival, she lost consciousness. She remained under my care for another 15 days. I started an intravenous line to hydrate her. I placed a nasogastric tube to feed her and another bladder catheter for her urine. She also had her diapers. I had to change her position every 2 hours, even during the night, and I did it. One morning after administering her food, she died. She did it in my arms. I was left with this great pain in my heart for the loss and the satisfaction of having cared for her during her last days. After she died, a few days later, I went to the health commissioner's office to take up my position as a rural doctor in a town in the eastern plains. Three hours away from my city. I stayed there for 2 years. I was only supposed to work for 18 months, but just when I finished my internship as a rural doctor, the hospital's competitions for medical interns had already ended. So I spent 2 years working in independent clinics. Later, they needed doctors in another town in the east, near the Cumaneses and Carupaneras coasts. I stayed there for two years. Almost at the end of these two years, I decided to specialize as a medical sonographer. It was very hard. I come every Friday to my hometown. Three hours on the road, to study and to return the same day to continue with my shifts. I did it, I specialized. I decided to quit and come back to my city. Since then, I have never worked anywhere else but in my hometown. I have been working as a medical sonographer for more than 15 years, and I thank God for this gift he has given me. I am still active, but now I work according to the patients I have in my appointment. I don't stress anymore, I don't jump from one place to another to get money. I now live peacefully, thanks to the fact that my son has graduated and I no longer need to support anyone but myself.
