I hope you’ll enjoy it. Back in the day, my younger brothers and I would go there almost every evening. Sometimes, we even had picnics by the riverside and had loads of fun together. But now, everyone is so busy with their own lives, there’s hardly any time left for such moments. For the past few days, the weather has been unusually cool despite the heat of the season. It wasn't too cold during the day, but the nights were quite chilly. Because of that, we didn’t go anywhere much during Ramadan. But for the last two or three days, it’s been getting pretty hot again. Yesterday, memories of those old Padma trips suddenly came flooding back—but the friends I used to go with are no longer around. While scrolling through Facebook Messenger, I saw one of my childhood school friends—Babu—was active. We chatted, and he told me his paperwork is all sorted—he might even be flying out after Eid. So I thought, since he’s free, why not go for a little trip with him? I quickly called him on Messenger and said, “Hey friend, let’s go to the river. It’s been ages.” In our area, we call that part of the river Padmar Chor (Padma’s island). So I told him, “Let’s go to the Padma.” He agreed without hesitation. I then took my bike and rode to his house. As soon as I got there, I gave him a call, and he quickly got ready and came down. I handed him the bike keys and took the back seat—something I hadn’t done in a long time, since my friend Suman always makes me drive. I told Babu, “Ride slowly, let’s enjoy the beauty of nature—the fields on both sides, the dirt roads—it’ll be refreshing.” And slowly we started riding through the countryside. The slower we went, the more beautiful the scenery became. On both sides, lush green rice fields stretched out, with farmers working and people returning home with their cattle after a long day in the fields. What a view! This kind of beauty can only be found in the villages. In the city, there’s nothing but concrete buildings and the endless blaring of car horns. It’s unbearable. But in the green serenity of the village, the heart instantly feels light and happy. I’ve grown up in the village, and I absolutely love it. That’s why I never feel comfortable staying in the city for long. My heart always yearns for that lush, green village life—where there are no traffic jams, no tall buildings—just greenery everywhere. Birds chirping, a calm, peaceful environment—that’s where I feel truly at home. While talking and thinking about all this with my friend, we finally reached the banks of the Padma. Since we had left a bit late, we couldn't get to the main Padma River. Actually, there are several branches of the Padma near our area. One of them is quite large, followed by smaller ones. These smaller branches are often called Kol in our local dialect. So we sat by the second largest one. Once, even this branch used to be wide and full of water year-round. But now, most of the water has dried up, and farmers grow rice in the riverbed. Sitting by it now feels more like sitting in a field with only a narrow stream of water flowing through. But we had seen the mighty Padma in our childhood—always full and often intimidating. Fishermen used to catch fresh fish there all the time. Nowadays, such fresh fish is only available during the monsoon. Every afternoon, my brothers and I would take the boat out—sometimes upstream, sometimes westward. At first, we weren’t very good at rowing, but later we became quite skilled. Those were sweet, unforgettable times. While reminiscing and sharing these stories with my friend, we didn’t even notice that it was already 6 PM. We were so caught up in talking that we forgot to take many photos to share with you. Still, the few pictures I did capture with my camera—I hope you’ll love them. That’s all for today.
