Los pálidos rayos de luz ámbar empezaba a llenar las habitaciones de la cara este de Ourea. Enclavada en la montaña, en medio de un campo de lava petrificada, Ourea, más que una ciudad en la montaña, era una ciudad montaña, había sido construida en el interior del macizo de roca, como mecanismo para hacerla segura ante los rayos cósmicos y radiaciones ionizantes, emitidas por la estrella que orbita Enlil, el planeta donde se encuentra. Poco a poco, a medida que la adecuación planetaria fue progresando, y el campo magnético artificial activado, fue migrando hasta llegar a poblar también el exterior de la montaña, la cual ahora, a la distancia, tenía la apariencia de estar cubierta por millares de minúsculas escamas, que en realidad eran edificaciones habitacionales, comerciales y gubernamentales, mientras que las industrias manufactureras, agrícolas y de servicios, mantuvieron su ubicación en el interior de la montaña. Aquella mañana Fernanda debía trasladarse al nivel más elevado de la ciudad, donde se encontraba la Academia de Enlil, era el momento de presentar el examen de admisión para los estudios para graduados en ingeniería mecánica. Salió de su departamento, situado en la cara sureste de la ciudad y luego de aguardar unos cinco minutos, abordó el funicular, que la llevaría al nivel intermedio, a lo que podría considerarse el centro de la ciudad, donde se encuentran los edificios de gobierno y las oficinas de muchas empresas, la parte más concurrida y densamente poblada de todo Ourea. Dejó el funicular, y se dispuso a cruzar cuatro calles para llegar a la estación de los tranvías elevadores, que ascendían al nivel superior, donde se encontraba la academia. Cuando estaba por llegar a la estación, un repentino estallido sacudió la ciudad, frente a ella, como si de castillos de naipes se trataran, dos edificios se derrumbaron repentinamente, y una nube de polvo llenó la calle por donde ella caminaba, Fernanda dio marcha atrás y al ver la masa oscura que avanzaba rápidamente hacia ella, corrió desesperada por una extrañamente vacía calle. ¿Qué había sido aquello?, se preguntaba, un ataque de algún tipo, terroristas, algún extraño y desconocido enemigo de los humanos, muchas ideas locas cruzaron su convulsionada cabeza, mientras corría sin mirar atrás por las solitarias calles. Pudo reconocer uno de los edificios que se había desplomado, era la estación de los tranvías, a donde ella se dirigía. Pensó en lo afortunada que había sido de no haber estado aún ahí, si hubiese llegado unos minutos antes, la explosión hubiese ocurrido estando ella en el edificio. Qué habría pasado con la gente que estaba en la estación, aquella era la hora pico, más de cinco o seis mil personas debían haber estado ahí en aquel momento. Exhausta y respirando con dificultad, se detuvo en la entrada de un local que estaba cerrado y se acuclilló, esperando cubrirse de la nube de polvo, que, en medio de su carrera, no había notado, se había detenido varios metros tras ella, se agachó cubriendo su cabeza y temblando de miedo, rogando que todo aquello pasase. Pasados unos minutos, se levantó exaltada por el peso de una mano apoyada sobre su hombro. Levantó la mirada para ver el rostro cubierto por una mascara respiradora de un hombre vestido con uniforme de bombero. —Señorita, ¿se encuentra usted bien? —pregunto la extraña voz del hombre, deformada por la máscara que le cubría el rostro. —Creo que sí, sólo estoy cansada y asustada, ¿qué fue lo que sucedió? —dijo Fernanda, aun temblando de miedo. —He sentido un estallido y vi como se derrumbaban dos edificios, ha sido algún tipo de ataque. —Tranquila no hay porque asustarse, le he venido a buscar porque los drones de vigilancia la han visto cuando huía de la nube de polvo —dijo el hombre. —Si hubiese caminado unos metros más adelante, se hubiese encontrado con la una barrera de seguridad y se hubiese dado cuenta de que estaban demoliendo la antigua estación de tranvías y el edificio del mercado de granjeros, que quedaba al lado. —Que la demolieron, ¿pero como puede ser?, sin avisar a nadie, sin medidas de seguridad —dijo Fernanda asombrada. —Pero si fue avisado, y las barreras de seguridad estaba a la distancia requerida, como le dije unos metros más adelante y las hubiese encontrado —explicó el bombero. —Pero la nube de polvo fue mayor que lo estimado y se extendió dos calles más de lo previsto, nada que los robots de limpieza no puedan solucionar unas pocas horas. She left her apartment, located on the southeast side of the city and after waiting about five minutes, she boarded the funicular, which would take her to the intermediate level, to what could be considered the center of the city, where the government buildings and the offices of many companies are located, the busiest and most densely populated part of all Ourea. He left the funicular, and set out to cross four streets to reach the station of the elevator streetcars, which ascended to the upper level, where the academy was located. When she was about to reach the station, a sudden explosion shook the city, in front of her, as if it were a house of cards, two buildings suddenly collapsed, and a cloud of dust filled the street where she was walking, Fernanda turned back and seeing the dark mass that was advancing rapidly towards her, she ran desperately through a strangely empty street. What had that been, she wondered, an attack of some kind, terrorists, some strange and unknown enemy of humans, many crazy ideas crossed her convulsed head, as she ran without looking back through the lonely streets. She could recognize one of the buildings that had collapsed, it was the streetcar station, where she was headed. She thought how lucky she was that she had not been there yet, if she had arrived a few minutes earlier, the explosion would have happened while she was in the building. What would have happened to the people in the station, that was rush hour, more than five or six thousand people must have been there at that time. Exhausted and breathing heavily, she stopped at the entrance of a shop that was closed and crouched down, hoping to cover herself from the cloud of dust, which, in the middle of her run, she had not noticed, had stopped several meters behind her, she crouched down covering her head and trembling with fear, praying that all that would pass. After a few minutes, she stood up exalted by the weight of a hand resting on her shoulder. She looked up to see the breathing mask-covered face of a man in a fireman's uniform. -Miss, are you all right? -asked the man's strange voice, distorted by the mask covering his face. -I think so, I'm just tired and scared, what happened? -said Fernanda, still trembling with fear. -I felt a bang and I saw two buildings collapse, it was some kind of attack. -There is no need to be scared, I came to look for you because the surveillance drones saw you when you were running away from the dust cloud," said the man. -If she had walked a few meters ahead, she would have encountered the security barrier and realized that they were demolishing the old streetcar station and the farmer's market building next to it. -They demolished it, but how can that be, without notifying anyone, without security measures," said Fernanda astonished. -But he was warned, and the safety barriers were at the required distance, as I told you a few meters ahead, and he would have found them," explained the fireman. -But the dust cloud was bigger than estimated and extended two streets more than expected, nothing that the cleaning robots could not solve in a few hours.
