First edition of this league held in 2008. This tournament has been held every year since then. This league was founded by Board of Control for Cricket in Indian (BCCI). There are 8 teams playing for this league. These eight teams representing eight different cities or States in India. There have been twelve seasons of this so far. Each team plays each other twice in home and away round-robin format in the league phase. Top four teams will qualify for the playoff. Top two team from the league phase will qualify for the quarter finals. Winners from two quarter finals will face each other at the finals. For some reason, many teams were banned and left from the league. Such as Pune Worriers India, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Deccan Chargers. And in 2015 Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals bannes for two seasons following their role in match-fixing and betting scandal. Two teams that replaced for those two seasons are Rising Pune supergiants and Gujarat lions. The latest edition is Dream 11 IPL 2020. Venue for this is changed to United Arab Emirates due to the affect of Covid-19.
