For some years now, the word *zoo* (at least here in Italy) has fallen into disuse, in favor of more ecological terms such as *wildlife parks* or *natural parks*. The term *zoo*, in fact, recalls in the mind of many a feeling of "exploitation of animals", not always acceptable in a world increasingly attentive to these issues; on the contrary, the term *wildlife park* seems to inspire greater confidence in people, giving these structures, almost by magic, a purpose of research and protection towards housed animals. The truth is that little has changed since talking about zoos. Obviously there is a greater attention to animals, to their needs and to their habitats... I certainly cannot say the opposite. Unfortunately, however, in most cases, those who manage these structures have not changed their vision: the animal is a means of attracting visitors and making more money. Fortunately, however, the stricter regulations of recent years have forced the administrations to hire an ever-increasing number of specialized figures (veterinarians and biologists); this has led to a radical change of mentality within the zoos, and today it is possible to see real wars between the administrations that do not intend to spend money to improve the living conditions of their animals, and the naturalist teams that every day, and by any means, try to do everything possible.

Da un po’ di anni ormai, la parola *zoo *(almeno qui in Italia) è caduta in disuso, a favore di più ecologici termini come *parco faunistico* o *parco naturale*. Il termine zoo, infatti, richiama nella mente di molti una sensazione di “sfruttamento degli animali”, non sempre accettabile in un mondo sempre più attento a queste tematiche; al contrario, il termine *parco faunistico* sembra ispirare maggior fiducia nelle persone, conferendo a queste strutture, quasi per magia, uno scopo di ricerca e protezione verso gli animali ospitati. La verità è che poco è cambiato da quando si parlava di zoo. Ovviamente c’è un’attenzione maggiore verso gli animali, verso i loro bisogni e verso i loro habitat… Non posso certo dire il contrario. Purtroppo, però, nella maggior parte dei casi, chi dirige queste strutture non ha cambiato la sua visione: l’animale è un mezzo per attirare visitatori e fare più soldi. Per fortuna, però, le normative più severe degli ultimi anni hanno costretto le amministrazioni ad assumere un numero sempre crescente di figure specializzate (veterinari e biologi); questo ha portato ad un radicale cambio di mentalità all’interno degli zoo, e oggi è possibile assistere a vere e proprie guerre tra le amministrazioni che non intendono spendere soldi per migliorare le condizioni di vita dei loro animali, e i team di naturalisti che ogni giorno, e con ogni mezzo, provano a fare il possibile.

And that is how, having obtained my master's degree in Biology, I found myself working in one of these parks. I was interested in protecting and preserving endangered species, but at the same time I had no intention of ending up working in a zoo where the animals were kept in cages. Thus, after several researches and curricula sent, I was hired on a safari, where almost all the animals are kept free in large areas, and made to enter the stables only for the night. All in all, therefore, the animals were almost free. It must also be admitted that, in the evening, it was the same animals that asked to be allowed to return to the stables, to have dinner and to prepare for the night. They have been beautiful months, I don't hide it. I spent endless days surrounded by giraffes, elephants, rhinos... Even tigers and lions. Working in such close contact every day allows me to develop special bonds with each of them, bonds that give more than people can think. Even today, when I go to the park to greet my old friends, Maya (an elephant female saved by a circus) stretches her trunk to touch me to greet me, as does Selene (a female tiger who was left an orphan as a child) who runs following me along the fence. And I must admit that I really miss the smell of damp straw in the stables in the morning, when still sleepy we arrived at the park to free the animals.

Ed è così che, ottenuta la laurea magistrale in Biologia, mi sono ritrovato a lavorare in uno di questi parchi. Ero interessato alla protezione e alla conservazione di specie in pericolo, ma allo stesso tempo non avevo nessuna intenzione di finire a lavorare in uno zoo dove gli animali fossero tenuti all’interno di gabbie. Così, dopo parecchie ricerche e curricula inviati, mi sono stato assunto in un safari, dove la quasi totalità degli animali viene tenuta libera in grandi aree, e fatta rientrare nelle stalle unicamente per la notte. Tutto sommato, quindi, gli animali erano quasi liberi. Bisogna inoltre ammettere che, giusta la sera, erano gli stessi animali a chiedere di poter rientrare nelle stalle, per cenare e per prepararsi alla notte. Sono stati mesi bellissimi, non lo nascondo. Ho passato interminabili giornate immerso tra giraffe, elefanti, rinoceronti… Persino tigri e leoni. Lavorare ogni giorno a così stretto contatto permette di sviluppare legami particolari con ognuno di loro, legami che danno più di quanto le persone possano pensare. Ancora oggi, quando passo al parco a salutare i miei vecchi amici, Maya (una femmina di elefante salvata da un circo) allunga la sua proboscide fino a toccarmi per salutarmi, così come Selene (una femmina ti tigre rimasta orfana da piccola) che corre seguendomi lungo la recinzione. E devo ammettere che mi manca molto l’odore della paglia umida nelle stalle la mattina, quando ancora assonnati si arrivava al parco per liberare gli animali.

But despite all this, every morning I also had to look into the eyes of animals that, even if in good condition, were clearly far from where they should have been. If the herbivores were perhaps very happy with their accommodation (large green expanses without any predators), they always seemed to me less happy the great predators... Condemned not only to eat "ready" meals but also to a life devoid of the many stimuli that nature can offer. Many times, in the evening before going home, I felt terribly guilty for having left them there, locked in their shelter for the night. Unlike herbivores, I am sure they would have preferred to sleep outside. Watching a lion inside a cage, knowing its strength and its greatness, and knowing that without those bars he would have the best, makes you feel small.

Eppure, nonostante tutto questo, ogni mattina dovevo anche guardare negli occhi degli animali che, anche se in una buona condizione, erano chiaramente lontani dal posto in cui avrebbero dovuto essere. Se gli erbivori erano forse ben felici della loro sistemazione (grandi distese verdi senza alcun predatore), meno contenti mi sono sempre sembrati i grandi predatori… Condannati non solo a mangiare pasti “pronti” ma anche ad una vita priva dei tanti stimoli che la natura può offrire. Molte volte, la sera prima di andare a casa, mi sono sentito terribilmente in colpa per averli lasciati lì, chiusi nel loro ricovero per la notte. Al contrario degli erbivori, sono certo che loro avrebbero preferito dormire fuori. Guardare un leone dentro una gabbia, conoscendo la sua forza e la sua grandezza, e sapendo che senza quelle sbarre lui avrebbe la meglio, ti fa sentire piccolo.

In the end, the most animalist part of me won , and I felt the need to leave that job. I was sorry to leave my colleagues, I was sorry to leave my animals; but I decided that, for consistency, I could not be part of a system that did not convince me. This is not to say that zoos or wildlife parks should be closed. Indeed, I believe that they are fundamental structures for biodiversity conservation; humans and their blind ignorance are causing the disappearance of many species, and parks can really help save a part. However, I think that continuing to hold in these parks even non-endangered species is hypocritical... It would be much more important to hold few and precise species, ensuring them first-class spaces and treatments, and explaining to visitors the importance of individual conservation projects. Why keep an oryx in captivity if, in nature, does not risk disappearing?

Alla fine, ha vinto la parte più animalista di me, e ho sentito la necessità di lasciare quel posto di lavoro. Mi è dispiaciuto lasciare i colleghi, mi è dispiaciuto lasciare i miei animali; ma ho deciso che, per coerenza, non potevo far parte di un sistema che non mi convinceva. Con questo non voglio dire che gli zoo o i parchi faunistici debbano essere chiusi. Credo anzi che siano struttura fondamentali per la conservazione della biodiversità; l’uomo e la sua cieca ignoranza stanno causando la scomparsa di tantissime specie, e i parchi possono davvero dare una mano a salvarne una parte. Tuttavia, penso che continuare a detenere in questi parchi anche specie non in pericolo sia ipocrita… Sarebbe molto più importante detenere poche e precise specie, assicurando loro spazi e trattamenti di prima qualità, e spiegando ai visitatori l’importanza dei singoli progetti di tutela. Perché tenere in cattività un orice che, in natura, non rischia la scomparsa?

The answer is not complicated at all. Most wildlife park revenues come from families with children; and to attract a large number it is necessary to have as many animals as possible, even if these are not in danger and are not connected to any project. This, in addition to being stupid and hypocritical, should be banned. A trivial example; in Italy there are dozens of native donkey species that are disappearing. Donkeys, however, do not capture the interest of the families and children, and so no park takes care of protecting them. Instead, large areas are destined to exotic species such as the *Lemur catta*, which is not only not in its habitat, but is not even in danger. This is intolerable to me.

La risposta non è affatto complicata. La maggior parte degli introiti dei parchi faunistici arriva dalle famiglie con bambini; e per attirarne un grande numero è necessario avere più animali possibile, anche se questi non sono in pericolo e non sono collegati ad alcun progetto. Questo, oltre ad essere stupido e ipocrita, dovrebbe essere vietato. Un esempio banale; in Italia esistono decine di specie autoctone di asino che stanno scomparendo. Gli asini, però, non fanno grande presa su famiglie e bambini, e così nessun parco si occupa di proteggerle. Vengono invece destinate grandi aree a specie esotiche come il *Lemur catta*, che non solo non si trova nel suo habitat, ma non è nemmeno in pericolo. Questo per me è intollerabile.

Unfortunately, I don't know how this can change. But perhaps the first step should be taken by the people who visit the parks, trying to find and see native and endangered animals, and preferring, otherwise, other structures such as wild animal recovery centers. And yes, under some points of view a lion might seem more interesting than a donkey... But it is not necessarily so, and even the message we can give our children will certainly be more important.

Purtroppo, non so come possa cambiare tutto questo. Ma il primo passo forse dovrebbero farlo proprio le persone che visitano i parchi, pretendendo di trovare e vedere animali autoctoni e in pericolo, e preferendo, in caso contrario, altre strutture come i centri di recupero per animali selvatici. È vero, sotto certi punti di vista potrebbe sembrare più interessante un leone piuttosto che un asino… Ma non è necessariamente così, e anche il messaggio che possiamo dare ai nostri bambini sarà sicuramente più importante.
