*Macropus rufogriseus*, also known as a **red-necked wallaby** or **Bennet's wallaby**, is a medium-sized marsupial belonging to the macropod family (the same as kangaroos), originating in Australia but now present, thanks to man, in several others nations including neighboring New Zealand, but also the furthest United Kingdom. Red-necked wallabies and Bennet's wallabies represent two subspecies that differ only in size: the first, more like a kangaroo, is larger than the second; bennet wallabies, in fact, as often happens to animals that live exclusively on islands with a limited surface, are subject to the phenomenon of **insular dwarfism**, a process that leads to the progressive decrease in body size for these species. From the evolutionary point of view, this phenomenon probably translates into an advantage as regards the supply of resources: smaller dimensions imply, in fact, less need for food. From a genetic point of view, on the other hand, this is still possible from repeated episodes of inbreeding, which lead to a more decisive and effective selection of favorable characters..

Il *Macropus rufogriseus*, anche conosciuto come **wallaby dal collo rosso** o **wallaby di Bennet**, è un marsupiale di media taglia appartenente alla famiglia dei macropodi (la stessa dei canguri), originario dell’Australia ma oggi presente, grazie all’uomo, in diverse altre nazioni tra cui la vicina Nuova Zelanda, ma anche il più lontano Regno Unito. Wallaby dal collo rosso e wallaby di Bennet rappresentano due sottospecie che differiscono tra loro unicamente per la taglia: il primo, più simile a un canguro, presenta una taglia maggiore del secondo; gli wallaby di bennet, infatti, come spesso accade agli animali che vivono esclusivamente su isole dalla superficie limitata, sono soggetti al fenomeno del nanismo insulare, un processo che porta alla progressiva diminuzione delle dimensioni corporee per queste specie. Dal punto di vista evoluzionistico, questo fenomeno si traduce probabilmente in un vantaggio per quanto riguarda l’approvvigionamento di risorse: minori dimensioni implicano, infatti, minor necessità di cibo. Da un punto di vista genetico, invece, questo è resto possibile da reiterati episodi di inincrocio, che portano ad una più decisa ed efficacie selezione di caratteri favorevoli.

Wallabies are mammals, and in particular marsupials; they have dimensions that can vary from the meter to the seventy centimeters, and an average weight of 16 kilograms. The tail can reach 70 centimeters in length, representing an extremely important appendix, capable of performing various functions. It feeds mainly on grass and aromatic plants, and for this reason it prefers mixed vegetation areas, where are avaible both prairies, for the search for food, and scrubs for shelter. Gestation lasts about a month, after which the females give birth to very little developed pups, which find shelter in the kangaroo pouch until they are fully developed.

Gli wallaby sono mammiferi, ed in particolare marsupiali; hanno dimensioni che possono variare dal metro ai settanta centimetri, e un peso medio di 16 chilogrammi. La coda può raggiungere a sua volta i 70 centimetri di lunghezza, rappresentando un’appendice estremamente importante, in grado di svolgere diverse funzioni. Si ciba prevalentemente di erba e piante aromatiche, e per questo motivo preferisce zone in cui siano disponibili vegetazioni miste di prateria, per la ricerca di cibo, e boscaglie per il riparo. La gestazione dura circa un mese, dopodiché le femmine danno alla luce cuccioli molto poco sviluppati, che trovano riparo nel marsupio fino al completo sviluppo.

From a social point of view, wallabies do not follow very precise patterns, and both small colonies and solitary individuals have been observed; in general, however, the only stable groups are formed by mothers and their young, until they reach sexual maturity. They are shy animals, but also very curious; this propensity for discovery often leads them to get closer to humans, towards which he shows a high tolerance and a good capacity for integration. Furthermore, wallabies seem to be extremely tolerant animals from an environmental point of view; they are successfully reproduced in different wildlife parks, and reintroduction attempts in the wild have shown sometimes unexpected results, with the rapid growth of the colonies. Even the populations currently present in the United Kingdom were founded by individuals set free or escaped from zoos, and here they had the opportunity to grow without major problems. The classic predators of wallabies are the different terrestrial carnivores related to the areas they belong to.

Dal punto di vista sociale, gli wallaby non seguono schemi ben precisi, e sono state osservate sia piccole colonie che individui solitari; in generale, comunque, gli unici gruppi stabili vengono formati dalle madri e dai loro piccoli, fino al raggiungimento della maturità sessuale. Sono animali timidi, ma anche decisamente curiosi; questa loro propensione alla scoperta li porta spesso ad avvicinarsi all’uomo, verso il quale mostra un’elevata tolleranza e una buona capacità di integrazione. Gli wallaby, inoltre, sembrano essere animali estremamente tolleranti dal punto di vista ambientale; essi vengono fatti riprodurre con successo in diversi parchi faunistici, e i tentativi di reintroduzione in natura hanno mostrato risultati talvolta inaspettati, con la rapida crescita delle colonie. Anche le popolazioni attualmente presenti nel Regno Unito sono state fondate da individui messi in libertà o scappati dagli zoo, e qui hanno avuto la possibilità di crescere senza grossi problemi. I predatori classici degli wallaby sono i diversi carnivori terrestri riconducibili alle zone di appartenenza.

### Curiosity The wallaby females, like those of the other marsupials, hide four nipples in their pouch and are able to produce, with each of them, a different type of milk, suitable for puppies of different ages. In fact, they give birth to only one puppy at a time and return to heat immediately after giving birth, and it is not uncommon to find mothers who also take care of three puppies of different ages at the same time. Recently has been observed the ability of females to "freeze" a newly fertilized embryo, waiting for it to be released inside the pouch.

### Curiosità Le femmine di wallaby, come quelle degli altri marsupiali, nascondono quattro capezzoli nel loro marsupio, e sono in grado di produrre, con ciascuno di essi, un diverso tipo di latte, adatto a cuccioli di età diverse. Infatti, esse danno alla luce un solo cucciolo per volta e tornano in calore subito dopo il parto, e non è raro trovare madri che si occupano anche di tre cuccioli di età diverse allo stesso tempo. Recentemente è stata osservata la capacità delle femmine di "congelare" un embrione appena fecondato, in attesa che esso venga rilasciato all'interno della sacca.
