Do you call that jazz? Yes, it's jazz! But differently. Why different? Cause all I want to do is dance. Of course, we're with the Sons of Kemet! You feel like you're in a dice cup of cultures. Two drums, percussion and the bass tuba set the rhythm. A pinch of rock, a dash of Latin groove and then the full load of Africa. Tom Skinner and Seb Rochford give the drum sticks their full expression. But Shabaka Hutchings, 30 years old and bandleader of the Sons of Kemet is the real man behind this projekt. “The music we play," explains the classically educated clarinettist, saxophonist and composer, "is like me. A bastard. But what is it, that distinguishes the Sons of Kemet from the traditional? The rhythms of the Caribbean, the dominance of the tuba, the sometimes aggressive saxophone or the rather tender influence of the clarinet? It must be the influence of reggae, which contains the flair of the Caribbean, but also points to its origins in Africa. Probably the biggest surprise will be, that this music does not come from Africa, not from South America or the Caribbean, but from the middle of London. I'd put it that way: Migration couldn't work better.

Ist das Jazz? Ja, es ist Jazz! Aber anders. Wieso anders? Weil ich ständig nur tanzen möchte. Ja klar, wir sind bei den Sons of Kemet! Du kommst dir vor wie in einem Würfelbecher der Kulturen. Zwei Schlagzeuge, Perkussion und die Bass-Tuba geben den Rhythmus vor. Eine Prise Rock, ein Schuss Latin-Groove und dann die volle Ladung Afrika. Tom Skinner und Seb Rochford lassen den Drum-Sticks ihre freie Entaltung. Doch den Taktsock schwingt Shabaka Hutchings, 30 Jahre alt und Bandleader der Sons of Kemet. "Die Musik, die wir spielen", erklärt der klassisch ausgebildete Klarinettist, Saxofonist und Komponist, "ist wie ich, ein Bastard. Aber was ist es, das die Sons of Kemet so von dem Althergebrachten unterscheidet? Alleine die Rhythmen der Karibik, die Dominanz der Tuba, das teilweise aggressive Saxofon oder der dagegen eher zart wirkende Einfluss der Klarinette, können es alleine nicht sein. Es muss der Einfluss des Reggae sein, der den Flair der Karibik beinhaltet, aber auch auf seine Ursprünge in Afrika hinweist. Die größte Überraschung wird wohl die sein, dass diese Musik nicht in Afrika, nicht in Südamerika oder der Karibik, sondern mitten aus London kommt. Ich würde es so ausdrücken: Besser kann Migration nicht funktionieren.
