**당일치기 서울 여행의 단상** =================== _03/06/2025

부산에서 독일을 오가는 게 피곤한 일인 줄만 알았더니 의외로 좋은 점이 있습니다. 당일치기 서울행이 상대적으로 수월해진 것이죠. 오랜 친구들의 공연이 있어 서울행을 결심했습니다. 마침 시간이 맞는 언니가 있어 공연 전에 만나 함께 시간을 보내기로 했어요. 맞춰둔 알람보다 30분이나 일찍 깨운 엄마 때문에 꾸던 꿈을 다 잃었지만, 맑고 산뜻한 마음으로 서울로 향했습니다. 버스에서 아침 햇살을 맞으며 명상을 잠깐 즐기니 토요일에 찾아온 평화가 더욱 실감되었습니다. 서울로 오는 2시간 30분의 절반을 독서로 보냈습니다. 멀미가 없는 이동 독서는 축복입니다. 하지만 일기를 쓴다고 몸을 숙여 흔들리는 기차 안에서 용을 쓰자마자 곧바로 극심한 멀미가 밀려와 마지막 20분은 지옥처럼 보내야 했어요. 하필 흰 티셔츠에 마시던 음료까지 튀는 바람에 화장실에서 추위를 대비해 챙겨온 가디건으로 갈아입어야 했습니다. 서울역에서 잠시 지하철 노선을 헷갈려 만나기로 한 연남동에 조금 늦게 도착했습니다. 이상하게도 부산보다 훨씬 더운 서울에서 땀을 뻘뻘 흘리며 약속 장소에 도착했어요. 친구가 대기 번호를 미리 받아두어서 얼마 지나지 않아 바로 들어갈 수 있었습니다. 거의 하루도 빠짐 없이 카메라와 렌즈를 들고 다녔던 저는 4년 전 지인의 소개로 오늘 만난 언니를 처음 만나게 됩니다. 언니는 필름으로 사진을 찍는 사람이었고, 회사일과 상업사진작가의 길을 훌륭히 걸어가고 있었습니다. 저는 35mm, 50mm, 135mm 렌즈를 챙겨다니는데, 이 언니는 한술 더해 해외여행에 화각대별로 필름 카메라를 들고 다니는 사람입니다. 나보다 더한 당나귀 같은 사람이 또 있었다니! 그때부터 언니가 부산에 올 때 시간을 함께 보내곤 했습니다. 우리가 마지막으로 만난 게 3년 전. 정말 웃기고 신기했던 건 결국 둘 다 과도한 카메라 무게로 어깨가 고장났다는 겁니다. 언니는 요가를 시작하며 치료 기간 동안 카메라를 덜 들기 시작했고, 저도 왼쪽 어깨가 고장나 미러리스 카메라 대신 컴팩트 디카를 가지고 다녔습니다. 그리고 지금은 오래된 캠코더 하나만 달랑 들고 다니고 있고요. 이날 언니 손에 들린 건 카메라가 아니라 저와 비슷한 연식의 캠코더였습니다. 언니가 산요 작티를 꺼내는 순간, 역시 우리는 비슷하다는 생각에 웃음이 피어났습니다. 요즘 저의 화두는 **가벼움**입니다. 글도 가볍게 쓰고 싶고, 카메라도 가벼워졌으면 싶고, 독일에 가져갈 짐도 가볍기를 바라며 '가벼움'의 감각을 체득하려 노력합니다. 어떻게 하면 알맹이만 쏘옥 남긴 삶을 살 수 있을까요. 삶을 가볍게 산다는 말이 별 할일 없이 헐렁하게 살고 싶다는 뜻은 아닙니다. 그보다는 나의 잠재력과 본질에 집중하는 삶. 내가 가진 재료로 가장 정성스러운 퍼포먼스를 이어나가고 싶다는 바람입니다. 홍대에서 공연을 한 오랜 친구는 스페인 세비야에서 8년째 한인 민박을 운영하고 있습니다. 원래 한국에서도 본 직업뿐만 아니라 빈티지샵과 스페인 음식점을 운영하며 여러 가지 프로젝트를 키워가던 사람이라, 스페인에 가서도 한식당과 카페를 오픈하더니 이제는 프라하에도 민박 사업을 확장해 곧 오픈을 앞두고 있습니다. 사람을 불러오고 인연을 이어가는 재주가 탁월한 친구입니다. 하나로도 골치아플 사업을 여러 개 해내는 모습을 보면서 제가 느낀 건, 모든 과정 속에 유머를 잃지 않고 너무 심각하지 않게, 자연스럽게 이를 해낸다는 거예요. 물론 사적인 영역에서는 엄청난 고충이 있겠지만, 적어도 겉으로 드러나는 모습에는 편안함 속에 솔직함까지 묻어납니다. 실제로 만나는 지인이든, 유명 인물이든 제게 영감을 주는 사람들은 모두 어딘가 여백을 품고 있습니다. 어쩌면 가벼운 삶의 비밀은 실제 '빈 공간'에 있을지도 모르겠네요. 공기가 들어가야 수면 위로 떠오를 수 있으니까요. 생각만 할 게 아니라, 진짜로 시간과 공간을 비워내는 것이지요. 그러면 자연히 남는 시간에 가장 본질적인 것들을 먼저 취하지 않을까합니다. 캠코더를 매일 들고 다니는 덕분에 이날 서울에 갔던 여정도 영상으로 남길 수 있었습니다. 영상 편집을 하며 자막을 넣는 방식으로는 이렇게 글로 쓰는 것만큼 주절주절 털어놓을 수 없다는 걸 깨달았습니다. 그 사실 또한 자연스럽게 받아들여보려고 합니다. 영상이 우선시 될 때는 이런 언어로, 글이 우선시 될 때는 저런 언어로. 경직되지 않게 저를 풀어두는 것을 연습하는 나날입니다.

**Reflections on a Day Trip to Seoul** ============================ _03/06/2025
I used to think that flying back and forth between Busan and Germany would be nothing but exhausting, but unexpectedly, it’s made day trips to Seoul feel much easier. When I heard that some long-time friends were performing in Hongdae, Seoul, I decided to make the trip. As luck would have it, a friend was also free that afternoon, so we made plans to spend some time together before the concert. I was in the middle of a dream when my mom woke me, thirty minutes earlier than my alarm. The dream evaporated on the spot. Still, I headed out with a clear and refreshed mind. On the bus, the morning sun warmed my face, and I took a few moments to meditate. That quiet sense of peace settled in—the kind that only visits on slow, open-ended Saturdays. The train ride to Seoul takes about two and a half hours. I spent nearly half of it reading, grateful to be free of motion sickness. But the moment I bent over to write in my journal, nausea hit me like a wave. The last twenty minutes were rough. To make matters worse, I spilled my drink on my white T-shirt and had to change into a cardigan I’d packed just in case the evening turned chilly. At Seoul Station, I got a bit turned around on the subway and ended up arriving late to Yeonnam-dong. The weather was oddly hotter than Busan, and by the time I met my friend, I was drenched in sweat. Thankfully, she’d already picked up a queue number at the restaurant, and we were seated not long after I arrived. I met her four years ago through a mutual acquaintance. Back then, I carried my camera and lenses with me nearly every single day. She was a film photographer who managed both a full-time job and freelance commercial work. I’d usually pack three lenses—35mm, 50mm, and 135mm. She’d go one step further, traveling with multiple film cameras, each with a different focal length. A true kindred spirit. We met up whenever she came to Busan, and the last time we saw each other was three years ago. In the time since, something oddly poetic happened: we both injured our shoulders from hauling too much gear. She started yoga and carried her camera less while she healed. I switched to a compact camera when my left shoulder gave out. Now, I carry nothing but a small, old camcorder. And wouldn’t you know—it was the same for her. That day, she pulled out a camcorder almost the same age as mine. The moment she revealed her Sanyo Xacti, we both laughed. Of course we’d end up like this. Lately, my thoughts have been revolving around the idea of **lightness**. I want to write lightly. I want lighter equipment. I want to pack lightly for Germany. I’m trying to embody this sensation of lightness in how I live. But by “light,” I don’t mean “careless” or “idle.” I mean a life that focuses on essence and potential. A life that distills things down to what matters. I want to make the most sincere performance I can with the materials I already have. That evening, my longtime friend Mario performed in Hongdae. He and Coco—friends who are like family—have been living in Seville for the past eight years. They run a Korean guesthouse called “Hola, Sevilla,” along with a Korean restaurant and cafe. Recently, they’ve expanded to Prague, opening a new guesthouse called “Hello, Prague.” Even before moving abroad, Mario had multiple projects running in Korea: a vintage shop, a Spanish bistro pub, and more. What impresses me most is not the scale of his work, but the way he carries it all with humor, with lightness. I'm sure there are heavy days behind the scenes, but outwardly, he radiates a kind of calm honesty. The people who inspire me, whether they’re close friends or public figures, all seem to carry a sense of openness. Maybe that’s the true secret of lightness—not metaphorical, but literal space. Like how a body needs air to float, we need space in our lives to rise. Not just mentally, but physically, emotionally. And when we make that space, the essentials often rise to the top on their own. Thanks to my trusty camcorder, I was able to capture this day in Seoul on video. But while editing, I realized: with subtitles, I can’t ramble like I do when writing. And that’s okay. When video takes the lead, I’ll speak that language. When writing leads, I’ll speak this one. I’m learning to be flexible, to let myself shift and soften and to move, always, a little more lightly.
