Do you cling to authority? Let's see.

Do you cower when the boss expresses displeasure? Do you think leaders are cut from a different cloth than you are? Do you need an expert in you field to give you a nod before you go all-in?

Well, if you answered yes to any of the above, I must respond with a resounding "Fuck that", my friend.

Your need for authority is illusory.

You're waiting for permission. You're waiting for answers. You're waiting for someone else to give you something that was never theirs to give. Authorities tell you what to do, but that doesn't mean that you ought to do it or even listen. And if an authority doesn't approve of you or notice you, you could be waiting a long time for them to say, "Go. You're ready."

What you ought to do is something that you already know. It's not in any rule book, employee manual, self-help book, or a $1500-a-pop-motivational-speaker seminar. You know what you ought to be doing. You're just not doing it yet. It's that niggling feeling deep down inside you. It's the thing you gave up on in the 10th grade. It's that fantasy that plays out in your head when you are in the shower (Ew, no. Gross. Not that fantasy. The other one).

You're the only authority that you need.

Will you be successful once you start becoming your own authority? I don't know. And I don't fucking care. Doing what feels right to you isn't about success. It's about listening to yourself, and chasing the things that you want to pursue. Being your authentic-self isn't half as dangerous as our brains make it seem. Just shut out all the noise that makes expressing who you truly are seem unwise or unreasonable.

You're not betting the farm or anything stupid. You're just trying to be yourself and to live the life that you want to live. Only you can give yourself permission to do that. Only you can validate the choices that you make.

Remember: Authorities always have an agenda. And that agenda doesn't always have your best interests in mind.

But don't worry. You're in charge now.
