Samuel & Co became The Shell Transport and Trading Company. After some time of relying on Rothschild/Nobel Caspian oil, they felt that the company was too vulnerable to supply shortages. They decided the Far East would hold promises of a new source of oil. The two companies merged in 1903, fearing competition from Standard Oil. They were now the Asiatic Petroleum Company. William Knox D’arcy was the man who received the exclusive rights to prospect oil throughout most of Persia for 60 years.
