Fixa dig själv innan du försöker fixa världen

Vill du leva ett bra liv, ett liv som är värt att leva trots allt lidande och alla tragedier som livet oundvikligen innehåller? Vill du ha bra relationer till andra människor? Då måste du först ha en fungerande relation till dig själv. Du behöver förstå dig själv, du kanske inte kan förstå dig själv fullständigt men det hjälper om du åtminstone har en aning. Gör ett personlighetstest om du inte har gjort det. Du kanske borde skriva en dagbok eller varför inte pröva Self-Authoring Suite.

Du behöver ta ansvar för dig själv och ditt välbefinnande. Du behöver se över vilka underliggande antaganden du har, vilka hemliga regler du lever efter. Du behöver fråga dig själv om dessa regler är rimliga, kan du nå dina mål om du följer dessa regler? Vet du ens vad du har för mål eller varför du har de mål du har? Är det verkligen du som har bestämt regeln eller är det något du omedvetet plockat upp någonstans av någon anledning? Skulle du vilja att någon du bryr dig om levde enligt de regler du själv lever efter? För att ta reda på vilka dina hemliga regler är behöver du observera ditt betende, vilka mönster kan du upptäcka?

Brukar du sabotera för dig själv? Då kanske en av dina regler är att du inte förtjänar att lyckas eller att vara lycklig. Ställer du alltid upp för andra, även när du inte vill, har tid eller orkar? Då kanske du har en regel som säger att du alltid måste offra dina egna behov för andras. Skulle du vilja att den du älskar eller den du bryr dig mest om levde efter samma regel? Jag föreslår att du lever efter regler som du skulle kunna tänka dig att den personen skulle må bra av. Det kan definitivt vara bra att ställa upp för andra och vara hjälpsam men du måste även respektera dina egna behov, hur ska du annars kunna respektera dig själv? Hur ska du annars undvika att bli bitter? Du vill inte bli bitter och om du är bitter så vill du inte fortsätta vara det.

Ta ansvar för dig själv och dina egna behov, försök hitta lösningar som fungerar både för dig, din partner, din familj, din släkt, ditt grannskap, ditt samhälle och mänskligheten i stort. Se till att det fungerar nu men även i framtiden, se till att det är långsiktigt hållbart och realistiskt. Börja alltid med dig själv och bygg därifrån. Alternativet har prövats i Sovjetunionen, Kina, Kuba, Venezuela och andra platser med minst sagt katastrofala resultat. Om ditt liv inte är som du tycker att det borde vara så kan du skylla på politiker, diskriminering, patriarkatet, kapitalism, dina vänner, din partner, din familj, Gud eller universum. Du kan göra det men jag avråder dig starkt från det! Du kan se dig själv som ett oskyldigt offer som har gjort allting rätt, men gör det på egen risk. Det är bäst för dig att det finns något du kan göra annorlunda eller bättre! Vad är alternativet? Jag menar inte att du ska förbanna dig själv och drunkna i självanklagelser, vem blir hjälpt av det? Jag menar bara att du antagligen har mer makt över dig själv och ditt liv än du tror.

Försök att inte ljuga för dig själv eller andra. Beordra inte dig själv, du är inte en slav som du kan styra och ställa över, om det var fallet skulle du kunna beordra dig själv att träna fem gånger i veckan och äta nyttigt, hur lätt som helst. Reflektera istället över dina mål, förhandla med dig själv. Behandla dig själv som om du vore någon du hade ansvar för att hjälpa. Du har makt över dig själv, var en god härskare, du har ju möjlighet att veta vilka dina behov och mål är till skillnad från de som tar sig rätten att härska över andra människor. De kan omöjligen veta vilka behov och mål alla har, ibland vet de inte ens exakt vilka mål de själva har förutom att få eller behålla makt.

Jag skulle inte rekommendera att vara en tyrann i dina förhållanden med andra människor. Tänk på att du aldrig kan vinna ett bråk med din make eller maka, om du vinner på den andres bekostnad så kommer du få sota för det senare. Om du alltid vinner så är du gift med en förlorare, det är inte bra. Ställ inte frågor till din livspartner om du inte tycker att svaret nej är acceptabelt! Att ställa en fråga utan att vara villig att acceptera ett nej är inte att ställa en fråga över huvud taget. Kräv inte att bli förlåten, uppskattad eller omtyckt, förtjäna det istället. Fria människor ställer frågor, förhandlar och hittar vinn-vinn lösningar när det är möjligt. De som tar sig rätten att härska över andra ställer krav och hotar, ofta är det förklätt till frågor.

Fix yourself before trying to fix the world

Do you want to live a good life, a life worth living despite all the suffering and all the tragedies that life inevitably contains? Do you want good relationships with other people? Then you must first have a functional relationship with yourself. You need to understand yourself, you may not be able to fully understand yourself, but it helps if you at least have a clue. Take a personality test if you have not done so yet. You may want to write a diary or why not try the self-authoring suite.

You need to take responsibility for yourself and your well-being. You need to review what underlying assumptions you have, what secret rules you live by. You need to ask yourself if these rules are reasonable, can you achieve your goals if you live by these rules? Do you even know what your goals are, or why you have the goals you do have? Was it really you who decided the rule or is it something you unconsciously picked up somewhere for some reason? Would you like it if someone you care about had to live according to the rules you live by? To find out what your secret rules are, you need to observe your behavior, are there any patterns you can detect?

Do you self-sabotage? Then maybe one of your rules is that you do not deserve to succeed. Do you always help other people out, even when you do not want to, have the time or the energy? Then you may have a rule saying that you always have to sacrifice your own needs for others. Would you want the person you care most about to live by the same rule? I suggest that you live your life according to rules that you wouldn't mind if that person lived by. There is nothing wrong with helping others, but you also have to respect your own needs, how else can you respect yourself? How else will you avoid becoming bitter? You do not want to become bitter and if you are bitter you do not want stay that way.

Take responsibility for yourself and your own needs, try to find solutions that work for you, your partner, your family, your community, your society and humanity at large. Try to make it work now, but also in the future, you want it to be sustainable and realistic. Always start with yourself and build from there. The alternative has been tried in the Soviet Union, China, Cuba, Venezuela and other places with disastrous results.If your life is not as you think it should be, you can blame politicians, discrimination, patriarchy, capitalism, your friends, your partner, your family, God or the universe. You can do it, but I strongly advise you not to! You can view yourself as an innocent victim, someone who has done everything right but do so at your own peril. For your own sake, it better be the case that there is something you can do differently or better! What's the option? I'm not suggesting you should blame yourself for everything wrong in the world and beat yourself up, who would that help? I just mean you probably have more power over yourself and your life than you think.

Try not to lie to yourself or others. Do not command yourself, you're not a slave to control. If it were the case, you could command yourself to go to the gym five times a week and eat healthily and it would be easy. Instead, reflect on your goals, negotiate with yourself. Treat yourself as if you were someone you were responsible for helping. You have autonomy, be a benevolent self-ruler, you have the ability to know what your needs and goals are, unlike those who claim the right to rule over other people. They can't possibly know the needs and goals of everyone, sometimes they don't even know exactly what their own goals are besides gaining or retaining power.

I would not recommend being a tyrant in your relationships with other people. Keep in mind that you can never win an argument with your spouse, if you win at the expense of your spouse, you will pay for it in the future. If you always win the arguments with your spouse you're married to a loser, that's not good. Do not ask your life partner questions if you don't think the answer no, is acceptable! Asking a question without being willing to accept no for an answer is not to ask a question at all. Do not demand to be forgiven, appreciated or well-liked, earn it instead. Free people ask questions, negotiate and find win-win solutions whenever possible. Those who claim the right to rule over others do so by demands and threats, often it is phrased as questions.
