The Moon has landed on the lawn of Victoria Memorial, for the happiness of the people of the city, who had been seen roaming around the dome of the iconic structure to see the spectacle.

An excursion artwork, the 3-D Moon of the Moon has been utilized with imagery from NASA's Chandra Lizard Orbiter Camera, one of the exhibition organizers said.

The 'Museum of the Moon' is a project of the British Council, supported by the Ministry of Culture. This weekend is displayed in the Victoria Memorial Hall in the city for viewers, British Council former director Debjan Chakraborty told the news agency PTI.

Artwork created in partnership with the UK Space Agency yesterday, director of British Council, India, Alan Jemail, secretary and curator of Victoria Memorial, Jayanta Sengupta, and director of MP Birla Planetarium, Devprasad Duari.

The moon's 23 feet wide replica is half a million times smaller than the actual moon. It is put together by British artist Luke Jerram, said Mr. Chakravarty.

"This is an important project for British Council, it merges into science with art," he said.

Artwork will encourage interest among astronomers among astro scientists, said director of MD Birla Planetarium.

"It is also interesting that 'Moon Museum' project came to Kolkata after 17 days of total lunar eclipse," said Mr. Durye.

Avantika Shah, a Class 10 student at a city school, was involved in hundreds of people who had gathered in Victoria Memorial Lawn yesterday to see the huge establishment.

He said, "The surface of the Moon looks so much life. I will choose the option of space research in the future," she said.

The 'Moon of the Moon' project has previously visited Bengaluru, Mumbai and Udaipur.
