Democracy in the United States is not dead. But there are signs that the democratic system is shattered. Donald Trump is just a symptom of the deeper problems.
They were there before him, and they'll be there after him. Take the growing polarisation, for example:
Republicans and Democrats are almost hostile to each other - completely independent of Donald Trump.
One of the main reasons for this is the increasing radicalization of the Republicans.*

There have always been demagogic populists in American politics, from Henry Ford in the 1920s to Democrats Huey Long in the 1930s to Joe McCarthy and George Wallace.
All these people have never received more than 30 percent of the votes.
However, as the structures of the parties and their voters have changed considerably, such challenges can no longer be cushioned so easily.
We saw the result in 2016: Donald Trump became US President.
