Situato nella 'Valle del Basento', offre un'interessante permanenza ai visitatori attraverso la bellezza delle sue perle d'arte medievali. Le origini del paese risalgono all'epoca longobarda, anche se il suo territorio era precedentemente abitato, come dimostrano i ritrovamenti di una necropoli nella località "Serra del Carpine" risalente al VI secolo aC. Il suo nome deriva dal latino Cancellatus che si riferisce alla presunta funzione di un campo di prigionia o da Canculi, che significa trappole per animali selvatici. Cancellara, costruita sul fianco di una collina, fu fortificata nel periodo normanno-svevo e cambiò dominatori fino al 1775, quando divenne proprietà di Benedetto Candida. Nel 1799, a causa delle sollevazioni napoletane che causarono alcuni violenti combattimenti, i suoi abitanti riuscirono ad ottenere l'indipendenza e innalzarono l'albero della libertà nel centro del borgo. Cancellara conserva una struttura urbanistica del borgo medievale dominata dal Castello, che fu costruito dalla famiglia Acquaviva di Aragona (1300). Oggi è in parte abitato da famiglie private. Nelle vicinanze si può visitare la Chiesa di Sant'Antonio che conserva affreschi del XV secolo e la Chiesa Madre dedicata a S. Maria del Carmelo. Altri importanti edifici religiosi sono: la chiesa di Santa Caterina D'Alessandria risalente all'epoca longobarda, la chiesa di San Rocco (XV secolo) e la chiesa e il convento di San Francesco. ***Cosa vedere:*** il Centro Storico, il Castello Medievale; la Chiesa Madre di S. Maria del Carmelo; la chiesa di San Caterina D'Alessandria (VII secolo); la chiesa e il convento della SS Annunziata; la chiesa di S. Antonio; la chiesa e il convento di San Francesco; la chiesa di S. Rocco.

Located in the 'Valle del Basento', it offering an interesting stop for visitors through the beauty of its Medieval pearls of art. The origins of the village date back to the Longobard era, although its territory was previously inhabited, as shown by finds of a Necropolis in the “Serra del Carpine” locality dating back to the VI century BC. Its name possibly derives from the Latin Cancellatus referring to the presumed function of a prison camp or to Canculi, meaning wild animal traps. Cancellara, built on the mountainside of a hill, was fortified in the Norman-Swabian period and changed lords up to 1775, when it became propriety of Benedetto Candida. In 1799, because of the Neapolitan Raisings which caused some violent fights, its inhabitants managed to obtain independence and raised the tree of freedom in the middle of the village. Cancellara preserves an integral Medieval village town planning structure dominated by the Castle which was constructed by the Acquaviva of Aragona Family (1300). Today is partly inhabited by private families. In the vicinity one can visit the Sant’Antonio Church which preserves frescoes from the XV century and the Chiesa Madre (Mother Church) dedicated to S. Maria del Carmelo. Other important religious buildings are: the Santa Caterina D’Alessandria Church dating back to the Longobard era, the San Rocco Church (XV century) and the San Francesco Church and Convent. ***Thing to see:*** the Historical Center, The Medieval Castle; the Mother Church of S. Maria del Carmelo; the San Caterina D’Alessandria Church (VII century); the SS Annunziata Church and Convent; the S. Antonio Church; the San Francesco Church and Convent; the S. Rocco Church.
