Vad är en osjälvisk handling?

När du känner en känsla, börja med att observera känslan med nyfikenhet och empati. Sätt en etikett på känslan, försök vara specifik. Ofta finns det flera lager av känslor, under ilskan kan det finnas rädsla till exempel. Observera dina tankar, du behöver inte bedöma om tanken eller känslan är “bra” eller “dålig”, “rätt” eller “fel”. Dina tankar måste inte vara obestridbar fakta, trots detta brukar många behandla sina tankar på det viset. “Jag är självisk” är en tanke, som många tyvärr har. Utöver den tanken tänker många “det är dåligt att vara självisk” och “därför är jag dålig”.

Människor vill inte vara dåliga, när vi säger till oss själva att vi är det och behandlar tanken som fakta så uppstår ofta negativa känslor. Om vi försöker observera våra tankar och känslor med nyfikenhet och empati så förstår vi lättare varför vi känner som vi känner och tänker som vi tänker, vi skapar ett mellanrum mellan upplevd känsla och handling. Ofta blir vi triggade av något stimuli och reagerar automatiskt utan att inse vilken känsla vi upplevde eller vilka tankar vi tänkte, sen rationaliserar vi vårt beteende i efterhand utan att inse att vi har hittat på en anledning till vårt agerande som inte stämmer överens med vad som hände.

Istället kan vi observera vad som händer kan vi analysera situationen och agera på ett sätt som vi anser är lämpligt. Observera känslan, försök inte trycka undan den eller förbjuda dig själv från att känna känslan. Försök inte avgöra om det är “rätt” eller “fel” att känna som du gör, kom ihåg att du är en människa som trots uppenbara begränsningar försöker så gott du kan. Du gör som du gör för att tillgodose dina behov, dina känslor kan hjälpa dig förstå vilka behov du försöker tillgodose genom dina handlingar och tankar. Ibland har vi behov av sömn eller vila men vi har även behov av att hjälpa andra tillgodose sina behov. Vi kan ha behov av att känna oss inkluderade, respekterade och uppskattade.

Vi försöker tillgodose det behov vi uppfattar som högst prioriterat, ibland är det ett omedelbart behov men ibland är det ett behov som har med framtiden att göra. Vi kanske försöker tillgodose vårt behov av trygghet genom att spara till vår pension till exempel. Anledningen till att vi upplever negativa känslor när vi tänker “jag är självisk” är för att vi tänker att vi är dåliga om vi är själviska. Det kan ju vara “dåligt” att vara “självisk” men det måste ju inte vara det. Om du till exempel har behovet att från ditt hjärta ge din tid eller dina pengar till någon som har behov av dem, att känna att du bidrar till att göra världen lite bättre än den var nyss. Då är du “självisk” som tillgodoser ditt behov genom att volontärarbeta i ett soppkök eller donera till välgörenhet. Det är alltså inte säkert att det är “dåligt” att vara “självisk”. I själva verket är allt som alla någonsin gör ett försök att tillgodose sina behov, även om behovet är att tillgodose någon annans behov.

Observera dina tankar och känslor samt andras känslor. Tänk på vilka behov som ligger till grund för dina känslor, och försök förstå vilka behov som orsakar andras känslor. Utgå inte från att du känner till exakt hur andra känner eller vad de tänker. Försök istället känna av vad de känner och kontrollera om du har gissat rätt. Tyvärr tänker vi ofta att vi “måste” offra våra eller andras behov för att tillgodose det behov vi för tillfället värderar högst. När vi försöker hitta sätt att tillgodose behov utan att offra andra behov så kan vi skapa win win situationer istället för win lose. Så vad är en osjälvisk handling?

Vad vi verkligen menar när vi säger att det är dåligt att vara själviskt är att vi inte gillar när någon offrar någon annan persons behov för att uppfylla sitt eget. Men det är skillnad mellan att offra en kannibals behov av att äta mänskligt kött på bekostnad av det potentiella offrets behov av att hålla sig levande, och att offra din hälsa för att möta din väns behov av sällskap.

What is an unselfish act?

When you notice a feeling, start by observing the feeling with curiosity and compassion. Put a label on the feeling, try to be specific. Often there are several layers of feelings, under the anger, there may be fear for example. Observe your thoughts, you do not need to judge if the thought or feeling is "good" or "bad", "right" or "wrong". Your thoughts must not be indisputable facts, despite this, many people treat their thoughts as if they ware. "I'm selfish" is a thought, which many unfortunately have. In addition to that thought, many think "it's bad to be selfish" and "therefore I'm bad".

People do not want to be bad, when we tell ourselves that we are and treat the thought as facts, negative emotions tend to arise. If we try to observe our thoughts and feelings with curiosity and empathy, we easily understand why we feel the way we feel and think the way we think. This creates a gap between perceived feeling and action. Often we are triggered by some stimuli and react automatically without realizing what feel we experienced emotionally or what thoughts we had. Afterwards, we rationalize our behavior without realizing that we have invented a reason for our actions that do not match what happened.

Instead, we can observe what happens, we can analyze the situation and act in a way that we consider appropriate. Observe the feeling, do not try to push it off or ban yourself from having the feeling. Do not try to determine if it's "right" or "wrong" to feel the way you do, remember that you're a human who, despite obvious limitations, tries your best. You act the way you do in order meet your needs, your feelings can help you understand what needs you are trying to accommodate through your actions and thoughts. Sometimes we need sleep or rest, but we also have needs like helping others meet their needs. We have needs of feeling included, respected and appreciated.

We try to meet the needs we perceive to have the highest priority, sometimes it is an immediate need, but other times it's is a need to prepare for future scenarios. We may try to meet our need for security by saving for our pension. The reason we tend to experience negative feelings when we think "I'm selfish" is because we think that we are bad if we are selfish. It can be "bad" to be "selfish" but it doesn't have to be. For example, if you have the need to give your time or money to someone who needs it, to feel that you contribute to making the world a little better than it used to be. Then you are "selfish" when you meet your needs by volunteering at a soup kitchen or donating to charity. It is therefore not certain that it is "bad" to be "selfish". In fact, everything that everyone ever does is an effort to meet their needs, even if the need includes to meet someone else's need.

Observe your thoughts and feelings as well as the feelings of others. Think about the needs that underlie your feelings, and try to understand what needs cause the feelings in others. Do not assume that you know exactly what others feel or what they think. Instead, try to understand what they think and check if you've guessed correctly. Unfortunately, we often think that we "must" sacrifice our or other's needs to meet our prioritized need. When we try to find ways to meet needs without sacrificing other needs, we can create win-win situations instead of win-lose. So what is an unselfish act?

What we really mean when we say it is bad to be selfish is that we don't like when someone sacrifices some other persons need in order to satisfy their own need. But there is a difference between sacrificing a cannibals need to eat human flesh at the expense of the potential victims need to stay alive compared to sacrificing your health to meet your friends need for companionship.
