Born in Gnomefel, the largest gnome city, Korvyne had a good life. His parents had high hopes for his future and imagined him becoming a great alchemist. Despite his knack for alchemy, though, Korvyne found it boring. Instead, he liked to play in the streets of Gnomefel with other gnomes his age, most of whom were less fortunate. At their urging, he joined them in minor thefts and other mischief.

It seemed like harmless fun at first, until Korvyne was caught for stealing a valuable ring. Tossed into a jail cell, he could only imagine what might happen to him and how ashamed his parents would be when they found out. Within an hour of his capture, however, a mysterious gnome vouched for him and claimed he had an alibi for the time of the theft. Set free, Korvyne questioned his unexpected rescuer, who simply said that the Shadowed Hands had a place for a gnome with his skills, if he ever chose to seek them out.

After that, Korvyne was even less content with his alchemical studies than before. Even his life of mischief and crime was no longer enough. The stranger’s offer ran through his mind over and over. The Shadowed Hands had a place for him. They considered him worth protecting.

Two days later, he ran away from home. Korvyne searched for the Shadowed Hands everywhere, but they proved as elusive as they were legendary. Months passed. Just as he was about to give up, the stranger who saved him appeared again. Yes, he promised, they still had a place for him, especially if he put his alchemical knowledge to good use. Korvyne left with him that night and soon found himself employed by the Shadowed Hands.
