For the life of me I will never understand **WHY** the guide at this turtle sanctuary in Sri Lanka insisted on handing me turtles. It was one of many odd moments my man and I had while visiting Sri Lanka last year. Our tuk-tuk driver randomly stopped off at this place in part because we needed a break (we were taking a scenic 4+ hour drive from the capital Colombo to Mirissa). It was a something of a tourist trap, but it offered us a chance to stretch our legs and get very close to live sea turtles. We also got a chance to see several Blue whales on a whale watching tour (as well as dozens of people becoming seasick—myself included unfortunately). Apparently, this region of the Indian Ocean sees more than its fair share of blue whales and even some pods of dolphins. If you ever do visit Sri Lanka I recommend you give it a try since you have better luck actually watching the whales surface for a quick “Hello!” Since we were travelling the island for over two weeks, it was impossible to include every special moment. We stayed at decadent hotels, ate spicy flavors of ice cream, met an elephant, and engaged in some cultural flair.
