Present day Philippine society sees him as the principal Filipino legend since he was the main local to oppose Imperial Spanish colonization. He is best known for the Battle of Mactan that occurred at first light on April 27, 1521, where he and his officers vanquished Portuguese wayfarer Ferdinand Magellan.
