A Night at the Theater: “Love According to Márquez

Last weekend, I went to the theater to see a play called “Love According to Márquez.” I didn’t know what to expect — I’ve read some of Gabriel García Márquez’s stories, but I couldn’t imagine how his magical, emotional prose could be turned into a stage performance. As it turns out, I was in for something truly moving and unforgettable.
The lights dimmed, and the stage lit up with warm, golden tones. The setting was simple — a small Latin American town, represented by a few pieces of wooden furniture and an old balcony. But what followed was anything but ordinary. The play wove together several stories by Márquez, all connected by the theme of love: young love, forbidden love, love remembered after decades of waiting, and even love found in old age.
The actors were incredible. Each one played multiple roles, shifting between characters with just a change of posture or accent. One moment, a man was a shy teenager sending letters to his beloved; the next, he was an old widower writing poetry to the ghost of his wife. The transitions were smooth and poetic — almost like reading one of Márquez’s books, where time bends and feelings blur the line between the real and the imaginary.
One of the most powerful scenes was based on Love in the Time of Cholera. An elderly man declares his love to a woman after waiting more than fifty years. Their conversation was so tender and full of memory, I saw people wiping their eyes in the audience. It wasn’t just the words, but the silence between the lines that carried weight.
What made the play stand out was how it captured Márquez’s spirit without trying to copy it. There was magic, yes — a parrot that recites poetry, a river that speaks in dreams — but the real magic came from the raw emotions on stage. The direction was intimate, almost cinematic. Soft music, candlelight, and quiet moments of stillness gave the performance a dreamlike rhythm.
As the curtain fell, the audience sat in silence for a moment before bursting into applause. I left the theater deeply moved, reminded that love — in all its forms — remains one of the most powerful forces in our lives. Márquez knew that. And this play reminded us all.
