Colby Woodland Garden originally played an active part in Pembrokeshire’s coal industry during the late 1700s and you can find little reminded of this time dotted around the 8 acre estate.
In the 1700s the site was owned by John Colby and was used for coal mining. It then passed hands to a pharmacist called Samuel Kay from Stockport, who used to holiday in Tenby, he bought the Colby estate in 1873 and is the person who really began planting the garden. His daughter went on to put in the ponds and begin planting the woodland.
In 1960 Colby passed the estate to Elidyr Mason, She sold the house and walled garden to Pamela and Peter Chance in 1965 but retained ownership of the woodland garden and wider estate. In 1979 she died and left Colby to the national trust. She has a memorial on long lane. In 1979 Peter also, transferred the ownership of the house and walled garden to the National Trust so they now owned the entire estate. They also have memorials on the estate.
🎉 Congratulations!
