Digger Wasp (Sphex argentatus)

in hive-144064 •  9 days ago

I found this insect around the swamp. It is called fire-tailed wasp which probrably refer to the color of its tail. I guess, I came in late afternoon that made this insect was a bit calm, not making a lot of move that eased me to take a couple of shots of this good looking insect. I saw many of them around, but I prefer to focus on a single fire-tailed wasp that was perching on the dried grass. Sphex argentatus is a solitary wasp that has a black body. The head and part of the mesosoma are covered with shiny white hairs. Has a small, slender and long waist (petiole). It has two pairs of wings, the ends of which have dots appearance, the front wings are larger than the hind wings.
