Tell your story#48 (The values That Spoke!)

My friend, Benedicta, was in a serious relationship with a guy about three years ago. At the time, the relationship was very official, both families were aware, and the plan was that they would eventually get married. The lady was studying at the College of Education, Akwanga, while the guy was a student at Nasarawa State University Keffi (Nsuk).

During their relationship, the guy would often invite her to spend weekends or nights with him. But because of the kind of upbringing and faith she holds dearly, she always declined respectfully. She made it clear that such visits were against her beliefs, and throughout the entire three years of their relationship, she never once disobeyed him or compromised her values.

Interestingly, she never imagined she would end up schooling at Nasarawa State University Keffi. But recently, when she applied, she listed it as her first choice and got admitted. Now here’s the twist, when she arrived and was looking for accommodation, the only available space the agent showed her was in the same compound her ex-boyfriend had stayed in during his time there. And that is exactly where she is now living.

The most amazing thing is this: because she had never accepted his invitations back then, she has no bad history tied to the compound. Assuming she been coming over then, even just once, living there now might have been awkward or uncomfortable. But today, the people in the compound respect and admire her for how decent and well-mannered she is.

It is such a striking irony of life. Who would have thought? The same place she avoided for the sake of her values became her safe and respected space years later. This indicates that sometimes, the decisions we make out of principle can end up protecting us in ways we never saw coming.

What you have learned from it

Below are some of the things I have learned;

I have learned that one's values can protect you, even when you don’t see it yet.

It is important to have self respect because, Self-respect speaks louder than anything.

Every choice you make today can shape how people see you tomorrow.

And lastly,, By being principled, you don't lose anything, it's actually a unique way of preserving your future.

Holding on to your values may not be easy, especially in a generation like this!. But One thing is certain, one day, they will definitely speak for you in ways you least expected.
