Yes, I do know what Orthopedics is. It is the branch of medicine that deals with the correction of functional problems or deformities in joints, bones, tendons, muscles, and ligaments. The people who take care of orthopaedics are called orthopedist or orthopedic surgeons. They take care and treat the following: broken bones (fractures), joint pain (like arthritis), sports injuries etc.

The treatment of orthopedic conditions includes the following: physical therapy, surgery, medication, and braces or orthopedic devices.

😁 At what age can orthopedic devices be used?

At any age, orthopedic devices can be used, which is based on the condition. However, below is a breakdown of how it can be used.

  • Toddlers and Infants: For congenital conditions like hip, or clubfoot, soft brace, dysplasia, or casting may begin within weeks ot birth.

  • Adolescents and Children: Braces for shoe inserts, devices or scoliosis can be used.

  • Elderly: Devices that support joint degeneration, arthritis, and mobility can also be used.

😁 Do you know the difference between orthodontics and orthopedics?

Difference

Orthodontics

  • A dental specialty focused on jaws and aligning teeth.

  • Treatments include the following; aligners, brace and retainers

  • It is common in dentistry

  • It is usually treated by orthodontists

Orthopedics

  • A medical specialty focused more on the musculoskeletal system

  • Treatments include the following: physical therapy, joint replacement, and braces for the limb.

  • It is common in general

  • It is usually treated by orthopedic surgeons

😁 Advantages of using orthopedics before orthodontics.

Advantages:

  • It helps to correct joint problems early which prevents surgery

  • It improves growth and facial symmetry, most especially in children with underbites, overbites, ot narrow jaws.

  • It makes the treatment of future orthodontics easier to treat.

  • It helps to improve breathing and speech.

  • It helps to boost our self-esteem early.
