I don´t see the problem with censorship on Steem that relevant to other platforms such as Medium or YouTube. Well, whales have a big chance to make some articles/comments disappear, but they will not be erased from the blockchain. Some frontends can make an account unable to log in or hide the text, but it cant be erased from the blockchain once written.
So even in those "downvoting fights" days, I see Steem as a relatively good solution for censorship-resistant media. Especially in comparison with some others.

Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

  • Disagreement on rewards
  • Fraud or plagiarism
  • Hate speech or trolling
  • Miscategorized content or spam
