The resurgence of AI (Artificial Intelligence) is one of the most revolutionary developments of our time. This capability has not only transformed the way that we work and communicate, but also led to a new social, economic, and indeed ethical order. AI has shifted from being an instrument to a partner that can learn, process enormous amounts of data and decide in a way similar to human being.

The Pros of AI are wonderful. AI, for one, makes everything more efficient, more productive across all sectors. In health, for example, AI can diagnose diseases faster and more accurately. Thanks to AI, manufactories can automate repetitive work and use AI developed tools and machines to reduce the burden on the human work force. Everywhere we turn in our daily lives AI is making things easier for us – in particular with virtual assistants, recommendations, real time language translation, and more. AI can also help sort though big data sets or for decision making,

But the cons or the negative points cannot be left behind either. One of the most worrisome is the threat to jobs. Even -132- human jobs are beginning to be superseded by faster and less weary automated ones. Furthermore, AI is also a matter of data privacy and information security, as this technology frequently involves accessing the users’ information. On the ethical front, AI-based decisions can produce moral quandaries, notably the “trolley problem” scenarios, whether for driverless vehicles or algorithmic justice. Furthermore, overdependence on AI can lead to the decline of human critical thinking skills.

I use AI in my life every day. For instance, I employ AI apps for planning schedules, setting up reminders and aids in generating creative content including video editing, text translation, photo editing etc. In the realm of education and work, AI is particularly good at fast information retrieval, report gathering and suggesting data-driven strategies. Even when shopping online, AI is enabling product recommendations that I like.

The sense of opportunity and threat reinforced the fact that AI, as in the case of a two-edged knife, if carefully used, is highly enriching but can be harmful if misused. The struggle is in how we steer and control AI as it develops so that we know which lane it’s in – the lane of being humane, ethical and being of as much benefit as possible to as many people as possible.
