La margherita gigante, conosciuta scientificamente come Leucanthemum × superbum, è una pianta erbacea perenne appartenente alla famiglia delle Asteraceae. Derivata da incroci tra specie spontanee europee come Leucanthemum vulgare, è una delle varietà ornamentali più apprezzate per la sua eleganza semplice e l’impatto visivo, soprattutto in giardini di campagna o bordure fiorite.

Si presenta con un portamento eretto e cespuglioso, con fusti rigidi che possono raggiungere altezze comprese tra i 60 e i 100 cm, a seconda della varietà e delle condizioni di crescita. Le foglie sono verdi, dentellate e disposte in modo alterno lungo i fusti, e formano una base folta da cui emergono i lunghi steli fiorali.

I fiori della margherita gigante sono in realtà infiorescenze a capolino, composte da una corona di petali bianchi (fiori ligulati) che circondano un centro giallo intenso (fiori tubulari), tipico delle composite. Il diametro può superare anche i 10-12 cm, rendendo questi fiori particolarmente appariscenti. La fioritura si verifica in tarda primavera e prosegue per gran parte dell’estate. Inoltre, i fiori sono molto graditi agli impollinatori, come api e farfalle, e sono spesso utilizzati anche come fiori recisi grazie alla loro buona durata in vaso.

Dal punto di vista della coltivazione, la margherita gigante è una pianta rustica e facile da coltivare. Predilige posizioni soleggiate e terreni ben drenati, freschi e ricchi di sostanza organica. Tollera brevi periodi di siccità ma beneficia di irrigazioni regolari nei periodi più caldi. Per stimolare una nuova fioritura, è consigliabile rimuovere i capolini appassiti. In autunno, una potatura alla base aiuta a rinvigorire la pianta per la stagione successiva. È resistente al freddo e si adatta bene anche a climi temperati o leggermente montani.

The giant daisy, scientifically known as Leucanthemum × superbum, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Derived from hybrids between European wild species such as Leucanthemum vulgare, it is one of the most appreciated ornamental varieties for its simple elegance and visual impact, especially in cottage gardens or flower borders.

It grows with an upright and bushy habit, featuring sturdy stems that can reach heights between 60 and 100 cm, depending on the variety and growing conditions. The leaves are green, toothed, and arranged alternately along the stems, forming a dense base from which the long flower stalks emerge.

The flowers of the giant daisy are actually composite flower heads, made up of a ring of white ray florets surrounding a bright yellow center composed of disc florets — a typical structure of the daisy family. The diameter can exceed 10–12 cm, making these flowers particularly showy. Blooming occurs in late spring and continues through much of the summer. The flowers are highly attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies and are also popular as cut flowers due to their long vase life.

In terms of cultivation, the giant daisy is a hardy and easy-to-grow plant. It prefers sunny positions and well-drained, cool soils rich in organic matter. While it tolerates short periods of drought, it benefits from regular watering during hotter months. To encourage continued blooming, it is advisable to deadhead the spent flowers. In autumn, cutting the plant back at the base helps invigorate growth for the following season. It is cold-hardy and adapts well to temperate or slightly mountainous climates.
