Back and Looking Forward - Imprinted by LightCaptured

in hive-185836 •  last month

Finally I have found the right time to post, back from a short vacation abroad.

As it often happens, I had a big backlog of stuff to do but today things are finally starting to look "normal" if there is anything normal nowadays, in our dynamic and sometimes crazy world...

Tomorrow, actually, is a very important day for my country as we are waiting for an official report by the European Council.

This report should give a simple formal answer "Yes" or "No" to the question if our country is ready to adopt the EUR as our official currency.

I don't want to go into the politics but as Bulgaria has been in a currency board for many years, and Bulgarian Lev (BGN) has been pegged to the EUR, this is quite a logical step into the right direction, in my humble opinion.

Interestingly enough, many things in Bulgaria are traded in EUR for many years.

Cars, rents, real estate properties, land and many others...

Many people already had saving accounts in EUR.

As BGN has already been pegged to the EUR, for ages, going full EUR is something absolutely logical, at least to me. Many fear that change, but I am actually looking forward to it. I experienced the hyper-inflation before the currency board was adopted and I don't want to experience this again. It was a real nightmare and I am surprised to see how easily people forget and fall victims of the right-wing propaganda...

Let me stop here, I didn't want to burden you with extra info ;)

Here are a few photos from around Bulgaria...

Well, I'm pretty skeptical, as you might expect from me. But that's because I've talked to people from Western countries who have already been through this. And those who are happy... if there are any from the West, we shouldn't forget that we're in a f^cked-up country here where nothing works properly, so I expect a huge cataclysm during which a lot of people will die. It'll just be easier that way.

I don't want to experience this again

Well, it's better to keep quiet about this than to keep upsetting you. 😂

I hope to see more people commenting here from countries that have already been through this, to share relevant experiences that may be helpful. For reassurance, knowledge, or preparation maybe... 🤔

Why not assume this change will go smoothly? For a change, as some say.

:P

Because it won't. 😅 100% sure. We have very bad days ahead of us, and blessed are the believers. I don't even know on what basis they are so happy that this will happen. You only need to look at the advertising campaign of the politicians who are promoting it. Thousands of nonsense have been spoken on their part, without saying a single meaningful word about a meaningful and predictable consequence. Even this is a clear sign that something is wrong. Today I heard another piece of nonsense from a political leader: "we are joining the richest countries." My God, the poorest are joining the richest! So what? Will this make us rich? No, it will make us even poorer.
Sorry for the pessimism. But I will not fall for the trap of another lie.

Well, I don't know.
There will be obstacles on the road ahead but as I said, all changes are challenging and the most of the people hate them :) I think that in the long run this change is for better life.

The future will tell.

I haven't heard a country to exit EUR and return to their older currency, have you? :D :P

It's simply because they can't do it anymore, not because they don't want to.🙃
I hope you have a solid financial foundation with which to face the crisis, because those who welcome it are precisely the people who will only profit from this change, while others will not be able to overcome it.
I can't even say right now: I hope I'm wrong. Because things are so tangible and obvious that it's impossible to continue looking through rose-colored glasses.

Well, nothing is "solid" in this volatile world :)))

I know there will be bumps and other hard obstacles on that road but my main positive thought about that change is one thing less in the hands of the local corruption to play with.

Just trying to be more optimistic, let's assume :D
Have a nice one! :)

I find it hard to believe that there are people happy with the euro. We've been lied to from the first day on and now decades later they say it's true. Life has only become more expensive and the prices are getting higher and higher.
We've been told that if we were for the same item everywhere in the EU the same price. That never happened, same for the so-called open borders. I'd rather see the BeNeLux back. The only thing that will happen is that cash will be removed asap and we all have the e-wallet where, within a few years, the government decides what you are allowed to buy for.

a good weekend.

The EUR is the second most powerful currency in the world at the moment.
So it is quite an achievement, ifs compared in age with the USD ;) Right? Just a few decades for EUR...

For a big, prospering Western country, the EUR could be dragging some aspects down. By the way, I've spoken to many regular UK folks, in conversations all of them say they regret Brexit.

Let's not forget Bulgaria is the poorest EU country with the highest index of corruption and mafia ruling several aspects of life. So, the less financial "independence" the local authorities get, the better for the common people who barely survive and buy quality food only during the holidays.

I don't want to imagine a scenario where the EUR is not adopted and then the currency board is revoked. Then in an year Bulgaria would be worse than Nigeria in economic terms, mark my words...

Cash will not be removed, any time soon, as Germans love it. Germany votes still count ;)
I also think everyone (ideally) realized that removing cash will leave us helpless in situations of emergency (similar to the blackouts in Spain & Portugal this year)

Have a great Sunday :)

You have some points and if it comes to corruption you forget Greece, Romania and plenty of other countries.
Keep in mind that the poorest recieve and these amounts has to be paid by????

Ask yourself what this will do with the value, not that this matters since we all are bankrupt which is the idea.. Wars, bankruptcy, spreading fear for the next plandemic and more nonsense is always good for a reset and push through total control.

I doubt the average citizen in England regrets. The price they pay per head is incredible high. Noticed how many live on the streets and how poverty increased during the "golden years" of the EU?

Read the EU agenda? How you are no longer are allowed to be you, have to give up on your nationality, culture, history? For sure it sounds paradise to you. I hope it will be since we are years ahead and I can tell you it's by far not as great as they make you believe. The youth doesn't see any future and rather dies.
I find this shocking in a country that claims to be free and great for everyone (except its own people). ☹️

All people hate change and would avoid it if possible.
It is not though.

Europe is doing so badly lately that all those people, economic emigrants, coming from Africa, the Middle East, etc. are now in panic and all returning to their own countries? :P :D

My point is, it isn't great... everywhere, we are screwed on a planetary level.

The reasons are down to our human nature. Greed, desire to possess more and more, much more than the necessary; power, money. Lack of Love...

Just a few decades ago I was forbidden not only to travel abroad but to work in a different city within my country. Only a handful close to the ruling party were given some freedom to go whatever they like. I wasn't allowed to dress as I like, I wasn't allowed to have a beard or a long hair. People went to prison for telling a joke about the "supreme leader".

Too bad young people forget such things and are more destructive than appreciative.

Everything comes with a price. Security is expensive.

Come live in Bulgaria for one year, not spending money won abroad, but find a local job outside the capital city, and spend the salary to pay rent, transport, utilities, proper food, health insurance, etc. and then let's talk who's good and who isn't :DDD

Actually you're right about one thing - for many here there isn't any freedom as if they quit job they will be homeless in a few months...

It isn't just EU agenda - check out each and every new movie coming out of Hollywood...

Actually I lived in a Western country and I travel a lot so I believe I still have some idea. Trust me, less corruption in Greece than here ;)

This is getting too political, I am going to halt it here. Everyone's entitled to an opinion.

I lived in Bulgaria...

Oh! So lovely :) So you have your own personal observation and memories :)
I'd love to hear some ;)
Any plans to come back here again?

Yes I have and I liked Bulgaria, in average East Europe, waiting with many for a package of sugar included With us the rush was back then way higher and it still is, same for the noise.

I think about it but it depends on my children plus someone has to take care of the wolves. I most like wait till they died or a few did since it's not easy for others to take care of them.

Life has only become more expensive and the prices are getting higher and higher.

This is not a consequence of the adoption of the euro in the long term. In all countries of the world there is inflation and prices are increasing, incomprehensible to me. But that there will be a boom in prices upon initial adoption in our country, this is 100% certain. And because we have no regulatory institutions or effective criminal authorities, the state never does its job, it will be very scary, much scarier than in other countries. I think they should ban by law dysfunctional countries like Bulgaria, corrupt and plundered by everyone, who somehow aspired to power, from entering into any alliances. But apparently Europe has some benefit from us, and a big one at that. Otherwise, it is unclear why they would accept us. Either way, the political games of the bigwigs are often illogical and incomprehensible to the average person, because there are hidden agreements, deals, services, and money flows that we will never find out about.

We've been told that if we were for the same item everywhere in the EU the same price.

This is impossible because all European countries have very different standards of living. And as illogical as it may seem, in poorer countries prices are higher, as in Bulgaria for some things. Now they will become even higher, but whatever.
I also don't think many people are happy with the euro, but those who haven't adopted it yet don't know that 😅

A good next weekend to you too!

The prices did go up with us as the euro was introduced.
First the exchanged rate we received 30% kess
Next we paid for many years way too much "fee" to join the club with money waaters.
We hardly receuve unlike the poor countries.
We have inflation as well + the burden of more and more jobless people
The rule was rhere/set but also during those first years countries who couldn't meet the high standards were "in".
Spain and Greece for example. Because those countries lack a pension system like we have, we can work till 72 so they can retire before they turn 60 🤯

Ha ha, that's funny, and very unfair, of course. But imagine how two weeks after they announced that we would adopt the euro, prices in the country had already skyrocketed. I was supposed to go shopping today, but I couldn't because I wasn't feeling well and I haven't seen the new prices yet. They say they've gone up by 40%.
There's still half a year until this actually happens, but what will happen until then, I just don't want to think about. Because in a country like this, things are really scary and the prospects are terrifying. And I don't even know yet what's more terrifying - a third world war, or what awaits us now in the economic and financial sphere in the near and distant future.

Congratulations!

There are still EU countries without euro.. the yes will for sure mean that you go straight into the e-wallet system idea... all the wef/world power ideas (read: restrictions) included.

Yes :) There are EU countries that seem will not adopt EUR like ever, as they negotiated that. (Denmark)
We've been under a currency board since 1997 (first pegged to the DM, then to the EUR), so all the restrictions are already applied, our country just didn't use all the advantages.

All my international bank cards are in EUR and each time I use them I pay at least 3% currency exchange fee. That is before all other fees and taxes.

The first countries setting it up had the choice like England. I doubt Hungary will ever introduce the euro. Not that there is any need to with the present banking system or should I say options and they all will introduce the e-wallet like ordered. As I understand everyone should have one this year.

The first I saw at ING. I never hit that button and cancelled all the accounts.

Upvoted! Thank you for supporting witness @jswit.

I hope you are ready for the next inflation and prices going up.

A good weekend!

Hey, this doesn't feel nice :)

The prices and inflation hasn't stopped going quickly up since covid and then the war in Ukraine.

It's not the EUR guilty, it is the greed of people that mainly does the "trick".

Here, in this country, for people educated under a communist regime, carrots, unfortunately don't work as expected. Sticks work better most of the times...

The prices with us went uo from the day the euro started. The real value was back then: 1 euro = 2.50 gulden. We were fooled in every way! We received for 1 euro 1.50!

The shops had to show the prices for a few weeks in euro and gulden and again we were fooled.

Next euro only and again tje prices were raised.

They said ut doesn't matter whete you buy your apple, everwhere the sane price. That never hapoened. The groceries, gasoline in Germany is way cheaper than with us not to mention the gasstation prices in Luxumbourg (no way this has anything to do with the war).

Another example: they said a plus would be that if money would be transferred to an account abroad (but same currency) no fee had to be paid. I can assure you we did pay a high fee and so did the receiver. Many with us complained and after a few years it changed. Still there are fees, also with those so calked online free (worldwide/European) bankaccounts.

Ask those countries who did join the EU lately. The first step was to close the bordees to not let the "refugees" from Italy in, border control and during all those years Austria always had control. Guns included. This waa not how the EU was promoted.

Also a question many have: why can't we buy a car abroad, let the car be checkedbannual, dothe driver's license where it's cheap. How come my groceries in Italy are way cheaper and the quality is better, the shelves are filled while they are emoty where I live?

Same EU, same law, same wars or?

🍀♥️

I'll get back to you once the change happens.
There are few more formal steps but if all those go according to the plan, the real adoption would be 1st of Jan, 2026. In a couple of months later no Bulgarian Leva should remain in mass circulation. So perhaps if the same scenario happens here, I'll know by February 2026.

I am frustrated about many things as well. The car prices example is a wonderful one, Bulgaria is the most expensive or second with regards to brand new car prices.

Actually, I researched one particular EV last month, in UK the basic price was GBP 14k, in Bulgaria exactly the same configuration - 44k BGN, that's about EUR 22.5k

Do tell! :(((

I won't lease and I boycott the local dealerships who are just too greedy, so I drive second-hand cars. I believe this is saving the planet better too. Many Bulgarians drive second-hand cars form Germany, Austria, Italy, UK too (the wheel at the wrong side, LOL)

Another irritating aspect, in the media here, there are frequently published food price comparison, Bulgarian Lidl then German Lidl prices.

Apart from the vegies and fruits in the summer (when local production brings down the prices) everything else is ALWAYS more expensive in Bulgaria. Some items are almost as twice as expensive compared to their German equivalents. Now put the salaries and standard of living in the equation... Sometimes it isn't living but surviving instead...

The second-hand car industry is strange. They make up the prices and the government gives a hand. As long as you need a car they ask what they like. Cars from Germany are imported by us as well, but Tax should be paid, and of course, the Dutch check ups with extra costs but as I understand it's not much different from other EU countries. A friend imported her car to Hungary and the cost were over 2000 Euro! For that amount a car can be bought. After all it's jus to drive from A to B.

Lidl and Aldi both became very expensive shops, unlike Aldi was 40 years ago. I rarely go over there. My child says the Lidl is "cheaper" now mainly because of the coupons but even these are not the same in different countries.

Sounds we all should shop in Germany at a cheap place or Italy if we are there (which I did by the way same for gasoline in Germany).

I won't lease either, it's way too expensive, and if you stop the contract, you are fooled and should deliver the car back as you received i,t meaning: polished (by a company), cleaned (by a company) and so on.

Here it comes: a friend in Belgium leases a car for about 15 euros per month via the MediaMarkt (strange) and if the tires or whatever is broken, it's all paid for or refunded, same for the car repairs and soever.

Why with them and not with us? It beat me.

Here we say: It's too much to die and not enough to live...

Totally! Second-hand car market is really weird :)
Remember how Covid halted new car deliveries and production so second-hand ones prices jumped high but now, long past covid, prices are still high. Surprise, surprise...

It's a popular business here in BG, I personally know two guys who do that for a living, a classmate and a friend in another city (good when I want to get rid of an old car ;))
I'm very pragmatic when it comes about cars - if it works, I keep it and maintain it as long as possible (I drive a 20 years old S.Korean SUV)
So, not a good customer to those businessmen :D

No Aldi in BG so far, but Kaufland instead, but I hate to shop their, the most of their "special offers" are fake - "out of stock" few minutes after opening :))) I still buy some items there, that I can't find elsewhere - horseradish, some cosmetics, wines, etc.

Agreed, apart from the discounted stuff, the most of the items are expensive but I like Lidl, 'cause I usually find all I need at one place, warm in the winters and cold in the summers. Also, the fastest payments compared to all other stores.

The car we have is a "second" hand Ford 2002 fine enough it drives and taken care off. I agree with you that buying new is a waste of money and also not good for the environment. I remember they gave big money if you gave your old car, next they paid you if you didn't leave it with them, today they give nothing but at the same time they sell the parts for high amounts (strange, strange, strange?). Since iron and car parts can be reused, it's simply a game they play (how to earn as much as possible)..

Kaufland we don't have but those discounts sound very familiar. The MediaMarket is famous for it. Before they start with the discounts they raise the prices with 30%.

There's nothing I need that badly that it can't wait. A big plus of the internet is that we can look around and see what others have to offer.

I rarely visit shops. They give me stress, especially before the weekend and before holidays where people behave as if they haven't been eaten in a very long time (also the idiotery during the Covid and toilet paper. I would say: use a piece of paper, water, your hand, plenty of options. As if you die without.

I agree with you that there are certain shops who do sell what others don't have. Lidl has a a better variety of fruits and vegetables. I did notice that the once "cheaper" supermarkets including the market all charge the same. The market became very expensive which already started with the euro.

A great weekend!

Before they start with the discounts they raise the prices with 30%.

Hahaha, so it doesn't matter which part of the world, stores do the same.

So so so familiar :D

Sometimes this increase-before-discount is only on the price tag :))) Marketing tricks, probably coming from across the ocean, after all. Wild-wild-west :D

Thank you and I wish you a great week. We are under a big house reconstruction, kinda urgent, so I hope to find soon time again to check out my favorite blogging blockchain :)))
