The red frangipani flower (Plumeria rubra) is a tropical marvel admired for its vivid blooms, exotic fragrance, and lush, sculptural form. Native to Central America and Mexico, this plant has become a beloved symbol of tropical landscapes and island beauty across Asia, the Pacific Islands, and the Caribbean. Among the many color varieties of frangipani, the red version stands out for its dramatic, passionate hues and sweet, heady scent.
Red frangipani flowers typically bloom in vibrant shades of red, crimson, or deep pink, often with yellow or orange throats. Their five rounded petals form a pinwheel-like shape, and their waxy texture gives them a long-lasting appeal. Each bloom emits a strong, sweet fragrance especially intense in the evening and early morning which makes it popular for use in perfumes and traditional ceremonies.Flowers grow in clusters at the tips of branches and can appear from late spring through early fall, depending on the climate.
The tree has long, leathery, dark green leaves that provide a lovely contrast to its bright flowers. These leaves are arranged spirally around the ends of thick, succulent branches.Frangipani trees grow up to 20–25 feet (6–7.5 meters) tall, but they can be kept much smaller in containers or through pruning. Their gnarled, sculptural branches make them ornamental even when leafless in winter.
