The Starry Wild Jasmine of Southern Africa

in photography •  last month

Jasminum multipartitum, commonly known as Starry Wild Jasmine or Many-Petalled Jasmine, is a delicate and fragrant flowering plant native to southern Africa. Known for its star-shaped white blossoms and sweet scent, this versatile plant brings elegance and aroma to any garden setting.Originating from regions in South Africa, Eswatini, and Zimbabwe, Jasminum multipartitum thrives in subtropical and warm temperate climates. It’s a naturally occurring part of forest edges and scrublands, where it grows as a scrambling shrub or climber, often weaving through surrounding vegetation in search of sunlight.

True to its name, multipartitum refers to the multiple narrow petals that form each star-like flower. The blooms appear mostly in spring and summer, with each flower radiating a gentle, sweet jasmine fragrance that intensifies in the evening, attracting pollinators such as moths and bees. The pure white flowers contrast beautifully against the plant’s dark green, glossy leaves, creating a classic and calming palette in the garden.
