A few weeks ago I discovered this very simple function on Google Docs that has profoundly changed the way that I approach my writing process.
I've been using it every day since the day I first discovered it.
I use it for every Steemit article I write, and it has dramatically improved the quality of my ideas and speed at which I write.
The hack I'm referring to here is the Text-To-Speech function on Google Docs.
Now I use Google Docs all the time and I was not aware of this function at all...so I’m assuming that there are some of you out there that are either:
- unaware of the function, or 2) completely forgot that it’s an option!
Watch the video below to learn how to use the function!
Simply put:
Open up Google Docs
Click "Tools" in the menu tab
Click "Voice Typing..."
Click on the voice icon that pops up... and speak!
When you're finished speaking, click the voice icon again.
Bada-boom!
I'm auditorily expressive in that I like to say and repeat things out loud, especially when I'm clarifying my thoughts. Thus, this tool is super effective for me.
After using this technology for a few weeks, I can now write articles two to three times faster (and sometimes faster!).
I'm also able to get out my thoughts much more effectively because I can be in the flow and I don't have to stop and critique my spelling errors (because sometimes I can get a bit gramatically OCD).
With text to speech, I can literally start expressing my ideas and within a minute I'll have already written out a page of writing.
Once I feel I have written out a good foundation of the article, I'll come back and structure what I wrote, and then finish it off with some final editing and styling.
The fact that I don't have to spend much time typing out the meat of the article makes the writing process much more enjoyable.
I don't think I'll ever go back and if you try it... you may feel the same as well.

Such a great idea! I use voice texting on my iPhone and iPad for replying to comments, but I usually sit down and physically type my posts - which is very time-consuming. I’ll have to give this a try, because like you, I am also very auditorily expressive. :-) thanks for the tip!

That's a great hack! I was thinking of doing something similar with a tool called Dragon Speak that has existed for years which basically provides the same functionality.
Overall, of course, since I write my articles in Google Docs like you, this is waaaay easier.
Cheers!

Yeah a few years back I was thinking of doing something similar... and now that its right in front of my face it's amazingly convenient. Woo! Thanks for stopping by @ansonoxy!

This is a really great idea for me, axios. I am far too critical of my own writing (spelling, grammar, the whole bit) and have always struggled with just "dumping" a rough draft without editing in the process. Maybe, just maybe, this will give me the juice I need to produce consistently for Steemit. Thanks so much for the tip!
